Lieberman: "Put the brakes" on new nuke plants

In the aftermath of Japan's devastation, Conn. Sen. says it's time for temporary moratorium on building new nuclear plants

(CBS News)

Independent Sen. Joe Lieberman on Sunday called for a temporary moratorium on the construction of nuclear power plants in the U.S. in the aftermath of Japan's devastating earthquake and tsunami, which damaged two reactors at a nuclear facility in the country's northeast.

"The reality is that we're watching something unfold," he said in an interview for CBS' "Face the Nation." "We don't know where it's going with regard to the nuclear power plants in Japan right now. I think it calls on us here in the U.S. - naturally not to stop building nuclear power plants, but to put the brakes on right now until we understand the ramifications of what's happened in Japan."

Japan, which was ravaged by an 8.9 magnitude earthquake and subsequent tsunami last week, is now struggling with a growing nuclear crisis as a partial meltdown is already likely under way at one nuclear reactor, and operators are frantically trying to prevent the disaster from growing worse.

You just knew this was coming from the weasels. We cannot stop our nuclear programs. It's essential for our nation. There is no reason to stop our programs and what we learn from Japan will help us make the plants safer. This is similar to stop drilling in the Gulf. These politicians are beyond contempt. Nuclear Energy is vital for our future and we cannot stop these programs from going forward.

Hydro...(pending)

NO, they already checked off Hydro-Power.

The Xlinton Administration greenies started a program of dismantling dams for the sake of the environment.

The days of the new big dam projects are over. The days of the existing dams are numbered although I can't see them dismantling the very biggest ones simply because they are so big.

These plants were built for 8.5, people are scared of nukes due to horror films.

No reports of Japanese zombies yet.

Amazing McLame’s buddy Joey is fear mongering.

If it were’t for the building standards in Japan, this story would be apocolyptic in nature.

Yeah Joe a 9.1 earthquake is going to cause damage.

You need to be praising the Japanese Engineers that are at the site fighting to stop a catastrophy. (bigger)

Since no new nuclear power plants have come online in the US since 1996, I’d say the brakes are already on.

But you get 10k people die from a tsunami they won’t stop building their houses right in a tsunami zone.

Crazy, isn't it?

Next thing we will see is people will forget and start moving back into the New Orleans flood plain again and then beg for assistance when they get flooded out by another hurricane.

Just give them enough time and they will forget.

Well we haven’t built any new plants for least 30 years so I guess it isn’t going to be a big deal.

The “brakes” on nuclear power plants have been on since the 1970’s. According to ten seconds of googling, the last new nuke plant went online in 1996. How much slower does the senator want us to go?

Joe, you ignorant slut. The power plants in question survived an earhquake measuring 8.9 on the Richter scale AND a wall of water over 30ft high. No serious radiation exposure. Grow a pair, you sissy.

Coal fired power plants are the worst polluters. Multiply the waste of one coal plant X the thousands now operating. Not to mention the coal slag piles.

“In fact, the fly ash emitted by a power plant—a by-product from burning coal for electricity—carries into the surrounding environment 100 times more radiation than a nuclear power plant producing the same amount of energy.” Our source for this statistic is Dana Christensen, an associate lab director for energy and engineering at Oak Ridge National Laboratory as well as 1978 paper in Science authored by J.P. McBride and colleagues, also of ORNL.-from Scientific American Dec 13, 2007

I agree with Joe. Let’s not build any new American nuclear plants in Japan. These stinking liberal jackasses won’t be happy until we’re all cooking rats over wood fires for food. We should cut off electricity and water to anyone that votes Democrat so they can experience the future they want for all of us.

Don’t buy into the Green Energy is Our Future scam. The goal of the Leftists is to cripple our economy by reducing our consumption of energy in order to make way for their vision of a Socialist America. They are not interested in windmills and solar panels - they just want to eradicate Capitalism and the inherent freedom that it carries with it.

This was the goal of the Soviet Union. The Soviet union is gone but the Anti-Capitalist movement lives on in the hands of the Watermelon Greenies.

people are scared of nukes due to horror films

You mean like the eco-freaks running hollyweird, and their drivel posing as "facts"?

The China Syndrome (1979)

Has there been a single new US Nuke plant been licensed since that movie?
