Catfish farmers oppose shift in inspection procedures (McLame defends imports of Vietnamese catfish)

HUNTSVILLE, AL -- A national catfish farmers' organization said proposed legislation by U.S. Sen. John McCain favors inadequate food safety requirements and ignores findings of banned substances in imported catfish products.

"It is stunning that Senator McCain has chosen to protect importers and Vietnamese farmers over the health and safety of American citizens," said Butch Wilson, newly elected president of the Catfish Farmers of America.

This will not impact me. I have eaten catfish of 3 occasions. I hated it and won’t try it again.

***Polyculture grown fish that have feasted on turds and other lovely stuff is not appealing to you?***

Ever see what a free range chicken eats, or a pig? Even beef will eat some really strange (to us) stuff!

Is there any reason to think that anyone involved isn't either rent-seeking or -selling?

I had thought it was more because of what they normally ate, being more of a bottom dwelling feeder.

I do remember a restaurant around Memphis back in the 1970s we went to that had a catfish pond you walked over on a bridge, and you could buy some feed for them and they got all excited and fought for it when you tossed it into the water. Don’t know if it was “The Wagon Wheel” or something like that.

This is the man who accompanied John Kerry to Vietnam to find POW’s left behind, and conveniently came up empty.John McCain was a big help in normalising relations with North Vietnam. Near the bottom of his Annapolis Class he never should have gone to flight school and during his stint in the Navy he crashed several planes.

Anyone surprised that he would stand up for the Vietnamese fishing industry?

Contrary to what some on here believe, they don’t eat poo. As if you’d bait a hook with poo... They eat what other fish eat - vegetation, worms, bugs, and smaller fish. Many times those feeding places will feed the fish dried dog food or alfalfa pellets or fish food whichever is cheapest. They’ll also throw out stale bread. Give a kid a loaf of bread and he’ll have a blast.

On the contrary, grain-fed channel catfish raised in farm ponds in Alabama and Mississippi are about the safest fish you can eat and they are very delicious. They are not at all like muddy tasting river catfish. You must not be from the South.

But from now on, be careful what you buy. Just because it says “Delta Raised Catfish” doesn’t mean it comes from the Mississippi Delta.

People should have a choice of what they want to buy, it just ought to be labeled correctly. If someone wants to buy catfish from overseas, that is their business. Restricting trade hurts everyone, especially the poor.
