Argentina's president will use Falklands as key to re-election
The Telegraph ^ | 3/13/2011 | Robin Yapp, Sao Paulo

Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner, Argentina's president, is using her refusal to appoint an ambassador to Britain as demonstration of her hardline on the Falkland Islands, a key plank of her platform for election in October.

Tensions over the sovereignty of the Falklands have increased since British companies began drilling for oil in the region just over a year ago.

Argentina responded last August by abandoning plans to install a new ambassador in London and reports in Buenos Aires now indicate that none will be appointed this year.

Political analysts said the decision suggested that President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner could stoke up popular resentment about Britain's stance on the Falklands to help win crucial votes in the October poll.

The Argentine government has continued to dispute British sovereignty over the archipelago since its 1982 invasion was defeated.

Prof Mark Jones, an expert in Latin American politics at Rice University in Texas, said Mrs Kirchner's government was likely to use "zealous rhetoric" about the Falklands.

"Kirchner will use the Falklands issue to score political points with the electorate as well as to distract public opinion from topics that are potentially damaging for the Government," he said.

Argentina has not had an ambassador in London since Federico Mirre retired in 2008.

José Nun, a former minister, was lined up to take on the role at the end of 2009 but his appointment was delayed and then cancelled in protest

No more aircraft carrier or STOVL jets, UK, no more Falklands.

That’s where this is going.

UK appears to be totally fine with it.

It did not end too well for Argentina the last time they tried to claim the Falklands.

The people of the Falklands overwhelmingly like being part of the United Kingdom. Argentina started an uprovoked war with Britain over this issue and they lost - the issue was settled then. It appears if they wanted to break away from Britain at any point, they would want to be an independent nation and not part of Argentina.

Falklands happy as British Overseas Territory and ‘don’t like being told by others what to do’

Machismo in Latin America appears to be a problem for both genders in Central and South America. The Argentinians may need to learn a lesson about every generation or so regarding the Falklands. Dumb move.

***The Argentine government has continued to dispute British sovereignty over the archipelago since its 1982 invasion was defeated. ****

An invasion designed to divert Argentine attention away from domestic problems.

The ship General Bellgrano(A survivor of pearl Harbor), went down in that fight.

Phil Donahue had a segment on his show about the Argentine conflict. The total ignorance of the audience was apalling as many blamed the US for that war.

This woman is a disaster. There is no way the Falklands is just going to roll over and let the Argentinians just take over. I wonder if this dopey play of hers is going to work. The only thing that is going for Christina is that she is mildly attractive.

Kind of like Ireland was populated by Irish people?

The Brits have enough problems at home, let alone protecting some insignificant islands 10,000 miles away.

Would you say the same thing about Guam? Should the US just let someone invade them?

The people of the Falklands overwhelmingly like being part of the United Kingdom.

Indeed. I visited there last year, and that was definately the sentiment I heard from virtually everyone I encountered.

She and her late husband - two totally corrupt politicians. Come to think of it, the only way she landed her job was by being married to the then current president. Kind of like Michelle succeeding Barack. Now, that is one very scary thought.

Speaking of Obama, how much do you want to bet that he would back Argentina, especially considering his past treatment of anyone British.

Politicians<

Argentina has barely crawled up from an econimic meltdown - and this (bimbo? war monger? astute politician?) is fussing over something they never had.

She must want that oil plenty bad to dick around with a nuke power..... Even what's left of the British Navy is far larger and more modern than anything the Argis could ever hope to field... /p>

If the Argentine’s elect this crazy corrupt b!tch again they get what they deserve! She has been a disaster for the country and needs to be bounced out. Problem is that all the politicians are corrupt as hell so it may be more of the devil you know versus the one you don’t but even so they could find one that’s a little bit less crazy.

His administration has already sided with them in calling for Britain to begin talks with Argentina. The Falklands have been British before Argentina existed as a nation. They have no claim to them - and they started an unprovoked bloody war with Britain over them in 1982 that they lost - the issue was decided then - no “talks” at this point make sense.
