The previous two-week extension passed 91-9, and Durbin and Schumer already signaled on yesterday’s chat shows that they’re open to the GOP’s new plan for a new three-week extension involving $6 billion in (mostly Democratic) cuts. So the stand being taken here is symbolic, but still welcome. It’s a national disgrace that, at a moment of universally acknowledged fiscal crisis (well, almost), the best Congress can do to solve the problem is make penny ante cuts via bite-sized budgets. And since the increasing absurdity of it means this could be the last short-term extension, it’s smart politics by Rubio, at least among the base, to get out in front of pointing out that absurdity.
The absurdity of what we have witnessed on the Senate floor is only eclipsed by the lack of leadership demonstrated by the White House, and a President who has been absent from this debate and even sent his lead negotiator on a five-day foreign trip.
All this has led to a very predictable outcome: Washington politicians of both parties scrambling to put together two and three week plans to keep funding the government, while not fundamentally changing the behavior that has gotten us into this mess to begin with.
Running our government on the fumes of borrowed spending is unacceptable, short-sighted and dangerous. I commend the efforts of House and Senate Republican leaders to deal with this, but I did not come to the U.S. Senate to be part of some absurd political theatre.
I will no longer support short-term budget plans. Attempts at new spending reductions are commendable, we simply can no longer afford to nickel-and-dime our way out of the dangerous debt America has amassed. It is time our leaders in Washington wake up and realize that we are headed for a debt disaster.

The dems have suceeded in playing our leadership like a song. The clock is running and no show down in sight. Republicans were elected and re-elected to make a difference, and while they have it all in the House, I hear no music yet, no explosions, both of which I was counting on easily by now. tic toc.

The Military Times printed an article that said the military would NOT get paid if the Gov. shutdown. Does anyone know if this it true?
My son called me and said everyone, even the Sgt.’s were talking about it today. The Military Times is published by Gannett, and I think they are stirring the pot against the Republicans.
Had a call from my Rep’s office today following up on my email regarding the wimpy CR. Don’t think my guy, Louie Gohmert will be voting Yea on it either unless its including cutting NPR, Planned PeeHood and nomamacare.
Reps are getting lots of contact on this, look for it to get beefed up with a big FINGER for the dems and the kenyan.
Give them hell Rubio that,s why we voted for you.

Only if the sec of defense went along with this charade. In any case, what is to keep the House from exempting the military and continuing to fund DoD?
I was in the military when the gov’t shut down when Reagan and Clinton were in...non-essential personnel got sent home...civilians(paper pushers)...the Military IS ESSENTIAL...the Commanding Officer’s put the word out to the Commissary’s/NEX’s (gas stations) to credit military personnel just in case... but we got PAID!!!!! Don’t listen to the Military Times; their in the tank...go online to military.com or check with your state reps if you want the right answers!!!!
I told my son that I would call our Congressman first thing this am.
