What’s TEPCO?

Tokyo Electric Power Co. They own the Nuclear plants and are responsible for running them.

Note that the spent fuel pool seems to be the most significant problem.

Fully agree with that!
We need to get the USG to comply with its own mandate, and screw Dingy Harry and his NIMBY ilk. Complete Yucca Mountain as soon as possible, so we don't encounter a similar situation with any of our coastal units.

Japan’s nuclear emergency prompts panic buying in Tokyo
Guardian.co.uk ^ | 03/15/11 | Justin McCurry

Posted on Tuesday, March 15, 2011 12:37:52 PM by OB1kNOb

News of a serious radiation leak at the Fukushima nuclear plant has sparked panic buying in Tokyo, as some residents started to leave the capital to escape potential contamination....

People in the capital, home to 12 million, snapped up radios, torches, candles, fuel containers and sleeping bags, while for the fourth day there was a run on bread, canned goods, instant noodles, bottled water and other foodstuffs at supermarkets......

Fears are rising that if the hoarding frenzy continues it will affect the ability to deliver emergency supplies to the disaster zone. “The situation is hysterical,” said Tomonao Matsuo, a spokesman for the instant noodle maker Nissin Foods. “People feel safer just by buying Cup Noodles.”....

West Coast Stores Selling out of “Radiation Supplement”

SACRAMENTO
Concern, if not fear, is sweeping the West Coast in the wake of that nuclear disaster in Japan. The Sacramento Food Co-op on Alhambra could be just one of many stores that sold out of so-called “Radiation” supplements.

New stocks are on backorder. But as one woman told FOX40’s John Lobertini, “I’ve looked all over Sacramento and I can’t find the stuff anywhere.”

Well Gal, we have to keep in mind that that stuff has to cross 3,000 miles to get here, all across the Pacific Ocean. What we're really talking about here is dust particles. As they cross the Pacific, they're going to disperse throughout the atmosphere.

I can't see that a whole lot is going to get this far.

But as a standard disclaimer, I'm a computer guy not a nuclear scientist. :)

Ah, so.

I hope they don’t take these failures personally.

There are some disasters you just can’t plan much for.

I heard that the plant was designed to withstand a 20 foot tsunami, they got a 21 footer.

I know I'm second guessing here, but from day one I've wondered why they couldn't fly in generators to keep those pumps running.

I heard that they did, but the connector plugs from the units didn't fit the old-style connectors from when the plants were built. They needed to 'hot-wire' the leads in place, and that takes time they had not enough of.

I was reading a thread in a Disney forum that the German embassy is mandating all germans staying at the Disney theme parks to return to Germany immediately.

And that Tokyo Disney may be shut down through April, the park itself suffered minimal damage, some window breakage, a lot of ground buckling and a section of a car park liquified.

All the stores and restaurants are out of food though.

And it is actually being discussed about what effects radiation will have upon the parks, but its from American posters. The MSM is still trying to drum up a “nucular mob” (yes thats my spelling)and its disgusting what its doing, for now I’m neutral on that subject, it could be bad, it could blow away.

What most people don’t realize is that the worlds powers systems are not all alike. I’m not sure what Japans current is but in the UK its 50hz 220v, and the 3 phase is even different. I actually have a 25kw military powerplant that was made for either European 50 cycle or US 60hz cycle.

Yah. I agree that this couldn't have been planned for. Just seems to me that their priorities were screwed up. Those nuke plants staying online and under control should have been priority #1, BAR NOTHING!

This wasn't a sudden problem with the nukes. The first day, a small problem with pumps were reported at one of the reactors. Then 2 days later, another problem, then another and another, just strung out, but all rooted into the basic problem of not having water pumping into the containment structures/fuel pools.

Just don't see why this was allowed to mushroom into a disaster on top of the other disasters that have hit the Japanese.

If it was, then it did survive the tsunami, but the backup generators for water distribution, did not! Not good planning!

It is a classic case of a common-mode failure and this will be the repercussion in the industry, try to enhance the availability of emergency power in cases where this kind of event can happen.

These plants need the ability to shut down on their own, to continue the process for days without human intervention until any residual heat or water loss is no longer a problem and the sucker is stone cold dead ...

There's some other issues that need addressing as well ...

Alex Jones is much worse than just a quack. He exists to marginalize and fragment opposition to our would-be rulers. He’s an incredibly destructive propagandist.

Basically, he is to patriots what Fred Phelps (D, Kansas) is to Christians.

The irony is that the plant that was hit hardest was on schedule to be decommissioned at the end of the month. Now instead of being shut down, it’s BREAKING down.
