“On FOX this morning....they had the author of Krakatoa, talking about the Pacific “Ring of Fire”..He had a map..showing the quakes in Chile, then New Zealand, now Japan...if one gives credence to the theory that the big quake in Chile got the whole Pacific region going, then following the activity around the outlines of the palte..the next area is the pacific Northwest..the Cascadia fault, just offshore Washington...really scary hypothesis..”

This does not bode well for the El Diablo Canyon Power Plant.

Excellent Blog if ur on the “nothing to see her” side of the drama in Japan. Take it as u wish.

“Update: (March 15, 2011 0439) Apparently there are now “experts” who are trying to get people up in a tizzy about used fuel pools. I have exchanged private email with some friends who have operation experience at similar types of plants as those at Fukushima Daiichi. In their opinion, it is possible to keep used fuel pools cool enough by simply refilling them with water every once in a while. We talked about using fire hoses and one more numerically inclined contributor to the discussion said that a typical garden hose would provide a sufficient quantity of water in just a couple of hours each day.

Check his bibliography on Wikipedia. It’ll make you want to make a run for the library.

Got 'em all, hard back, first editions. :) I even found a FE of his Prison Diary from when he was in an Argentina prison for three months. If he ever comes to Texas for a book signing, I'll be first in line with a wheel barrow. (I know, I'm a dork.)

Further confusion surrounds events in number four reactor building where a fire was reported in or around a pool used to store fuel rods that had been removed from the reactor. Reports from Japan indicate technicians are unable to pump water into the pool, and it may now be dry.

In the meantime, the key task for workers at the plant remains to get enough water into the reactors – and, now, into the spent fuel pools – with the poor resources at their disposal. …”

(Scrolling news banner says TEPCO is considering using a helicopter to drop water on the reactor buildings — and that there is a ban on aircraft flying in the 30-km radius to prevent aircraft picking up radioactive contamination.)

Thanks Errant for that chart. That is one of the most helpful things I’ve seen in all of this to help know where things are at.

Potassium Iodide Runs Low As Americans Seek It Out

NEW YORK (Dow Jones)—Supplies of potassium iodide, a preventive against radiation poisoning of the thyroid gland, are running low at some manufacturers, as Americans seek protection amid fears that radiation from Japan could head to the U.S., according to the companies.

One leading supplier, Anbex Inc., quickly sold out of its supply of more than 10,000 14-tablet packages on Saturday, said Alan Morris, president of the Williamsburg, Va., company.

He said the closely held firm was getting about three orders a minute for $10 packages of its Iosat pills, up from as few as three a week normally.

“Those who don't get it are crying. They're terrified,” said Mr. Morris. The company tells callers that the likelihood of dangerous levels of radiation reaching the U.S. is low, but some callers, particularly on the West Coast, remain afraid, Mr. Morris said.

Official Fukushima Radiation levels at 10:22am JST
Reactor 2: 30 milli sieverts
Reactor 3: 400 milli sieverts
Reactor 4: 100 milli sieverts

Officials have confirmed that these levels will cause immediate harm to humans, not just over a long period of time.

I know darn well that supply was probably bought by a very few amount of people just so they can make an outrageous markup on it.

I really doubt the people especially those from the farm lands would do that in Japan.

I would suspect the Aleutians will have a 7.5 or so, and then maybe next month Seattle will have one about 6.0.
