Activists confirm plans to peacefully take Capitol
By Todd A. Heywood | 03.15.11 | 12:47 pm

A group of Michigan activists has confirmed that it plans to stage a protest in the state Capitol building at 4 p.m. today.

Lance Enderle, a former Democratic candidate for Michigan’s 8th Congressional district, confirmed moments ago that he is leading the protest.

“We are planning to exercise our free speech rights in a non-violent way,” Enderle said. “We will take the Rotunda, and we are not leaving.”

The Capitol building closes at 5:30 p.m. and officials have told Michigan Messenger that anyone remaining in the building after 5:30 will be given a 10 minute warning to leave. If they don’t leave, Michigan State Police troopers could eject them or arrest them for trespassing. The problem for state police troopers, however, might be in mustering the manpower. In last year’s budget, Republican lawmakers voted to close the Capitol police post, which has left the state with only two Michigan State Police troopers and the Sergent at Arms staff. It is likely state police will have to muster road patrol staff to help eject protesters.

“We shouldn’t be surprised that people are extremely upset,” said David Holtz, executive director of Progress Michigan. ”What Republicans are trying to do is a declaration of war on hard-working middle class families. Civil disobedience has deep roots in our democracy. And when democracy is threatened, people will respond.”

Year of so ago some little American princess was in Gaza protesting for the palestinians. She got whapped with some sort of non lethal shotgun blast that nailed her in the forehead.
Looked like ya hit the toad with a ball bat and hit a home run.
Use those rubber bullets.

There are MILLIONS more ‘hard-working middle class families’ in the private sector than in unions. WHAT ABOUT US?? The Governors are trying to save the majority of the true middle class!

I grew up in a Michigan township where our only law enforcement presence to speak of were two state police officers. Sheriff deputies (of which one was a friend) spent all their time in the town and cities in the area. Whenever there was a problem, the state guys were the ones there.

I live in Michigan, and I’ve heard a couple times on the radio this afternoon that “1000 elderly people” are going to the protest.

lsj has an article about that- seniors protesting the pension tax. they have a quote from one guy talking about being worried about seniors living on "meager pensions." funny thing is, he's from gaylord.
i want a "meager pension" that allows me to make an ~400 mile day trip, with gas at $3.65/ gallon. he's probably spending more today than he would annually on the tax if it passes.

No kidding and the new one doesn't cost $1 per year to lease. This one costs hundreds of thousands per year to lease. One of the developer perks of being friends with Jenny Granholm I guess.

The majority of people in Michigan getting a pension big enough to be taxed are union retirees.

Use the old southern trick. Where a crowd gathers pour sugar all over the place before they arrive. The ants that gather will do the rest.

This is Michigan. You won’t see an ant stirring until the third week of April

that’s one of the problems. county seems more interested in playing around in the cities that have their own patrols, or sitting around on the highways, than being out patrolling and dealing with rural areas like they should.

state police shouldn’t have to cover these areas.

Candidate from what election? A little factoid they conveniently left out was that he was a write-in candidate and didn't get enough votes to even get on the ballot for the general election last November. That's appropriate - a loser leading a pack of losers.

They should turn off the lights, lock the doors, and go home. No electricity, no bathrooms, no computers, and the lawmakers are meeting somewhere else.

Step back, let them have it, go somewhere else and conduct your business.
