Washington Post apologizes for plagiarized articles
Yahoo News ^ | 3/16/2011 | Michael Calderone

The Washington Post apologized Wednesday for publishing two articles in March that "contained substantial material that was borrowed and duplicated, without attribution, from The Arizona Republic newspaper."

"This is the most serious kind of matter for a news organization," executive editor Marcus Brauchli said in a statement to The Cutline. "Taking information without attribution is unethical and not in keeping with The Post's standards of journalism. There are no mitigating circumstances for plagiarism."

The Post, in the apology, doesn't name the reporter or link to the articles in question. But from the paper's own description of the articles, published shortly after the Tucson shooting, they appear to be written by Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter Sari Horwitz.

How much was borrowed? "Ten of the article's 15 paragraphs were copied in whole or in part from an article that first appeared in the Republic," according to the Post editor's note.

“Our ability to quickly blame right-wing political rhetoric trumps journalistic ethics.”

One of the many reasons why they loathe the Internet.

Sounds like a case of major plagiarism to me. Always a bit embarrassing when one of your senior Pulitzer Prize winning journolists turns out to be a plagiarist.

Still, I guess it’s better than having a Pulitzer Prize winner on your who helped Stalin cover up millions of murders in Ukraine. And the NY Times has never really made good on that one.

“contained substantial material that was borrowed...”

Borrowed my rear, it’s called THEFT. They are sorry they got caught and were forced to apologize... nothing more.

IS this plagarism, or is this copyright infringement? I imagine it’s hard to sue for the plagarism, but much easier to sue someone for violating a copyright, especially for money.

They really used to be a better paper technically; but declining revenues have forced them to let go of many experienced editors and writers. I never could stand their politics, but I can stand incompetence less.

Now I need to be clear on this:

Did she violate current Post standards for plagiarizing others’ works, or did she violate their plagiarizing standards because she got caught?

I don’t think there are claims for plagiarism.

Here’s some info on copyright infringement:

Always a bit embarrassing when one of your senior Pulitzer Prize
winning journalists turns out to be a plagiarist.

What about fabricated stories? (unless they are about non-liberals) I
recall one Janet Cooke [while at WP] making up stories about an
8-year-old heroin addict that won a Pulitzer Prize.

The Pulitzer prize needs to be renamed the Booby prize. What an ethical boob! Does anyone read the yellow rag, the post?
