Sarah Palin is smiling somewhere, the House votes to cut off funding to NPR

When Sarah Palin talks, people listen. They might not always agree, but they certainly hear the former Alaska governor loud and clear.

Recently the hockey mom was a guest on the Sean Hannity show and like many conservatives, Palin took aim at National Public Radio and several other federally funded arts and educational agencies.

"NPR, National Endowment for the Arts, National Endowment for the Humanities, all those kind of frivolous things that government shouldn't be in the business of funding with tax dollars -- those should all be on the chopping block as we talk about the $14-trillion debt that we're going to hand to our kids and our grandkids," Palin told Hannity on the Fox News Channel. "Yes, those are the type of things that for more than one reason need to be cut."

Wednesday more than 200 readers of the Culture Monster blog left comments debating the issue. Many suggested Palin didn't know what she was talking about. "I curse John McCain for giving this woman a voice in the national media," said one. "I don't know why someone who quit their only important elected office for monetary gain even gets a say," wrote another.

Thursday the House of Representatives voted to cut federal funding from NPR in an attempt to trim the bloated federal budget. It would also prohibit its local affiliates from using federal dollars to purchase programming from NPR or any other source.

Some readers are trying to find a silver lining in what others consider a troubling move by Republicans. Their comments after the jump.

"This may actually be good for NPR. They will no longer have to self-censor for fear of offending the flat-earthers who oppose any form of public discussion that doesn't revolve around all the urban myths they promote.....

Cutting anything is a start in a process which must begin somewhere. It is all done while the Treason Media screams. Some people are deluded into believing that the Tea Party took power in Nov. It did not. Electing a few endorsed candidates is NOT the same as convincing the rest of the country. I had hoped smarter folks would understand this simple fact.

If I’d called Reps. Duncan Hunter, Michele Bachmann or some other potential candidate a homosexual, I’d expect to be banned as well.

Bad. It marks the failure of the conservatives to win the culture war. Why not take over NPR? It’s a good outlet to promote culture and education.

It is too thoroughly infiltrated. You would have to fire everyone and the government doesn't have the authority to do it. In military terms if you cannot hold a bridge you blow it up so that the enemy cannot use it.

You really don't understand the concept of constitutional government, do you? The goal is not to do unto liberals as they have done unto us, no matter how tempting. The goal is to return to limited government and to give people their freedom back (a large part of which involves letting them keep their own money, rather than having it taken through excessive taxes and government spending to be used on agendas contrary to their own will).

Don't give in to the ends justify the means mentality. You'll become just another sort of liberal.

The government doesn’t have any business running a radio station, liberal or conservative. I see no mention of it in the Constitution.

Next step is to make public radio and TV pay for their broadcast licenses like everyone else. Licenses are sold by auction, I believe, and NPR is sitting on prime FM real estate.

Sure, and how has this project been going? I've been hearing it for 30-40 years, and it's the Right's equivalent of the Left's Utopia. We've been defunding NPR for 40 years. The best we on this side can do is accuse each other "You really don't understand the concept of constitutional government, do you?"

I think his profile page is faux... just a game. I’ve seen this before, by others just looking for a laugh.

“The Senate cannot fund anything the House does not initiate.

Not only was it not “meaningless” but whacking at the CR at 2 Billion a week does not hurt either.

Some fools, of course, think they can turn the Queen Mary on a dime. They naturally know nothing but how to squawk.”

Right, right. Those grand statesmen named Bonehead and Can’t-or are real Profiles In Courage to bring to the floor a stripped down gas-can of a bill that has no chance of going anywhere, and they know it. And right again: the $2 billion (which of course was wiped out by the mere interest on the debt on the very day they passed this joke of a CR), was yet another Profile In Courage, right? I mean, $2 billion in the face of a multi-TRILLION dollar deficit must mean those two geniuses have everyone right where they want them. Yeah, that’s it. Not.

So you tell us then. When this current joke of a CR expires in three weeks, what is it those two outstanding Repubican Leaders in the House will do then?

“Wasn’t Reagan the last pol with Presidential aspirations who openly called for the end of actual programs?”

Nope. NPR survived Reagan. But we almost killed it in 1995.

And Sarah is Palin-like. One vast difference between Reagan and Palin is that nobody wasted time comparing Reagan to another dead conservative.
