Govt 'rejected U.S. offer to help cool damaged reactors'
The Yomiuri Online ^ | 19 March, 2011 | Yomiuri Shimbun

Posted on 03/18/2011 8:36:57 PM PDT by Errant

The government turned down a U.S. offer of technical help to cool overheating nuclear reactors in Fukushima Prefecture soon after last week's massive earthquake because it believed the offer was "premature," The Yomiuri Shimbun has learned.

The reactors have since been hit by several explosions and radiation has leaked out. Some observers believe this could have been prevented if the government had accepted the U.S. offer.

The article seems to leave out the part that in return for US help Japan was supposed to permanently deactivate the 10 Fukushima (1 and 2) reactors.

2226: The Yomiuri Shimbun newspaper, quoting a senior official of the ruling Democratic Party of Japan, said the US made the offer immediately after the disaster damaged Fukushima No 1 nuclear plant. According to the unnamed senior official, US support was based on dismantling the troubled reactors run by Tokyo Electric Power (TEPCO) some 250 km (155 miles) northeast of Tokyo. However, the government and TEPCO thought the cooling system could be restored by themselves, the report said.

I noticed that too. Could this be a misinformation campaign?

Many articles popping up now blaming TEPCO.

Yeah cause we know having more people is always better. Especially people who aren’t familiar with the plant and don’t speak the language.

Thanks for the link. It doesn’t sound unreasonable to me. Build (rebuild) it on higher ground so this doesn’t happen again.

Made by a leftwing anti-nuclear group not letting a good crisis go to waste in order to take pot-shots at the powers that be?

Or we let the whole thing blow up.

Having dealt with several weather related IT disasters during my career I can attest that these callers from on-high who interrupt you to insist that you entertain their extemporaneous “plans” only ever make things worse. You have to let the people you have in place to handle crisis situations do their job. If those people can’t handle it then it’s too late and you’re already screwed. Trying to make or remake disaster plans in the middle of a disaster is the worst possible circumstance.

Obama Regime looking to help clean up GE's Mark 1 reactor mess at Fukushima, payback for Jeff Immelt's purchase of 25,000 Chevy Volts?

Good use could be made for our abandoned missle silos. Put new design nuke reactors in them and seal them for the life of the power plant or forever. They’ve been putting nuke power plants on submarines for years.
