U.S. and British warships have reportedly launched the opening salvo of the intervention in Libya called Operation Odyssey Dawn firing some 110 Tomahawk cruise missiles at Qaddafi anti-air defenses, mostly on the coast of Western Libya and extending between Tripoli and Benghazi. Word is that U.S. AFRICOM will run the first few days of the operation in an effort to shape the battlefield before turning over command to another member of the coalition.
The initial launch also included the launching of American electronic warfare aircraft.
The Post suggest that the administration has been has been reluctant to lead the operation, and would quickly turn over control to its international partners after the opening salvos.
CNNs Ed Henry reports from an administration official that the Pentagon is planning for heavy, kinetic action on the part of U.S. forces, lasting days, not weeks.
Secretary of State Hillary Clinton seemed to underscore that point:
We did not lead this. We did not engage in unilateral actions in any way, but we strongly support the international community taking action against governments and leaders who behave as Gaddafi is unfortunately doing, Clinton said.
In addition to the missile attacks, at least 20 French jets have begun enforcing the no-fly zone over Benghazi, already destroying at least one suspected pro-Qaddafi vehicle. More here.
In a statement from Brazil, President Obama said of the intervention:
I am deeply aware of the risks of any military action, no matter what limits we place on it . . . I want the American people to know that the use of force is not our first choice, and its not a choice that I make lightly. But we cant stand idly by when a tyrant tells his people that there will be no mercy.
Fitting I suppose, considering everything...
They better hope this clown didnt get ahold of any anti ship missiles.
Seems to me the Brits lost a ship or two back in their little ditty with Argentina.
They better call it Odyssey Down. One French jet downed so far.
Someone on Twitter suggested a more appropriate name—Operation Bracket Buster.
Sounds like a frigging cruise ship.
How about “Operation Down Low on Libya”
Yeah. Obama's Operation Rio Love Boat
So, is Obama foolish enough to think this will endear him to “hawks” of the conservative persuasion?
I’m very sorry to hear that.
Don't be. It's not true.
"We deny (that), all the planes that went out today have returned," spokesman of French General Staff, Thierry Burkhard was quoted by AFP as saying.
Previous report by Libyan official television said one French plane was shot down by Libyan force in the region of Tripoli.
The Libyan Navy does some missile craft. I don’t know which side the Libyan Navy has backed in the fighting. The Tomahawk land attack missile has a much longer range than any anti-shipping missile the Libyans have so the shooters should be in no danger.
The link got messed up...(perhaps as well)...
What should we call him; Libya Luke or Tripoli Tim?
Dang, they just don't have that same ring, do they?
That is ship to ship. The exocet can be fired from the air.
There was a report a few days ago that Rebel forces sank two Loyalist ships, but I don't know if that has been confirmed.
Supposedly, there are still two old Foxtrot submarines tied up alongside dock, but they haven't been to sea since 2003 and are considered to be inoperable.
People inside the building give names for everything.
If you don’t have a super-secret-name for your operation you ain’t squat!
Geez Chief. You got a few in. My poor ol uncle had 38 in. 30 full time. I dont know if the other 12 count or not in the reserves.
I don't know, I kinda like Tripoli Tim.
'Operation Arugula' (Zer0 does Al-Qaeda's dirty work - Can you say 'caliphate coalition'?)
Is this the first time we ever started a war and the President was outside of the country and on vacation?
