Census: More Blacks in South Moving to Suburbs, GOP Regions to Become Democratic

Politically speaking, America's Republican stronghold is the deep South, where vast suburbs surrounding cities like Atlanta, Dallas, Richmond and Charlotte are decidedly white and often politically conservative.

But population trends -- revealed in the last U.S. census -- show blacks and Latinos moving in to southern suburbs in high numbers, which threaten the notion of Republicans enjoying a safe harbor in southern states for much longer.

Census estimates show a 58 percent increase in the number of blacks who moved to the suburbs, compared to 41 percent for the rest of the country. This increase is up 52 percent from 2000.

Unless there is a large voting shift in black folks, who vote overwhelmingly for Democrats, the population shift could prove to be a bonanza for the Democratic party with an infusion of Democratic votes in traditionally Republican-leaning districts.

The news isn't much better for the Republican party when it comes to Hispanics, who also tend to vote more consistently for Democratic candidates.

Hispanics represented a larger portion of southern population gains than blacks did in 13 of the 16 southern states in the last 10 years, according to the census. Hispanics were a larger portion in just seven states from 1990 to 2000.

So as greater racial and ethnic integration come to America's South, greater numbers of black and brown faces in southern cities and suburbs could bring an end to a longtime GOP-voting advantage and shift the nation's political landscape.

People move to the burbs when they can afford it. This means a lot of blacks and hispanics now have a stake in their own lives they didn't have as clients of the welfare state. When they start paying taxes instead of harvesting income tax credits, they will look at things in a strange new light. It might take an election cycle or two but in the long run, I would not be worried by this.

Rats with the likes of housing construction limitations, redeveloping urban centers, thus placing previously affordable urban housing out of reach due increased scarcity have succeeded in driving blacks out of Oakland, and San Francisco.

It is happening in the South as well.

What hesays is true. My county of gwinnett was southern Democrat until ‘94. Thenit became heavy Republican. In another 10 years it could be majority minority. Cobb coounty is going the same way. when I first moved to eorgia in 1985 Dekalb county was a GOP stronghold but now it is overwhelmingly black and Dem. The countyr clubbers who didnt secure the borders and wanted just to get there tax breaks are just going tohave to pay for it.

Did the article evince any scintilla of a desire for a change in "culture and attitude"? I didn't see one. What the author was talking about, was whites losing their representation in Congress, losing their power. The author, indeed, said this:

The fact is that the demographic trends ARE NOT with the blacks in America. The fact is that a large percentage of Blacks are murdered in the womb. As a demographic reality is concerned, Hispanics,Not a real race in the first place, have already supplanted Blacks as the largest minority in America, and after another two or three generations, Blacks will have little or no political power to speak of. They will be less than 8% of the population and falling.

Hispanics intermarried with other whites at the same or greater rates as other nationalities. Just like the Irish married Germans and Italians and French immigrants and nationalities in America. The so called Hispanic race, which unfairly lumps, Cubans, Mexicans, Hondurans, Argentinians, and every other Latin American country together, marry other Americans of Irish,English and Other heritages at greater rates than any other nationality has done in the past.

Blacks hold themselves outside the main stream at their own peril. Demographics show their power is already waining. Particularly in the Democrat Party.

The blacks that move into the suburbs are usually conservative. The two families in our neighborhod displayed Republican signs during election season. They are nice folks.

Achievers work hard for their lot in lot in life for themselves and their families and detest having to support the consumer, non-producers who are lazy and looking for their neighbors to support them.
