Sarah Palin aborts visit to Bethlehem
Daily Telegraph (UK) ^ | 21st March 2011 | Adrian Blomfield

Posted on 03/21/2011 2:51:42 PM PDT by propertius

Sarah Palin has emerged at the centre of a potentially embarrassing mystery when she abruptly aborted a visit to Bethlehem just yards from an Israeli checkpoint guarding the entrance to the city of Christ's birth.

Mrs Palin, whose trip to the Holy Land is being seen as an attempt to burnish her foreign policy credentials ahead of a possible presidential bid, had been planning to tour Christian sites before holding evening talks with Benjamin Netanyahu, the Israeli prime minister. Bethlehem was supposed to be her first stop of the day, according to a leaked copy of her schedule.

....

It is unclear whether Mrs Palin and her team failed to realise that Bethlehem lay on Palestinian territory rather than in Israel, a mistake often made by foreign tourists, though not so often by visiting politicians

Why use the word “abort” when you can use other words, like CANCEL?

Is there some agenda behind the use of this word?

Bethlehem is almost entirely Muslim controlled, with Christian persecution on the rise.

Bringing her there would have involved a huge military presence rolling in, with tanks, etc. The last thing she needed was to spark the 3rd Intifadah business the Arabs are hungering to launch.

Just trying to smear her to look incompetent.

Author felt compelled to use the term “abort” and “Bethlehem” in the same sentence due to his sick wish that Jesus had never been born.

unbiased write would have used:

Palin cancels Bethlehem visit
or
Palin suddenly cancels Bethlehem visit

sounds like they went up to the checkpoint, got a nice view, then turned around. they went to a monastery that has a good view of bethlehem and surrounding areas. no big deal.

if she had a sense of humor she’d say she was disappointed that she didn’t get to see where Obama was born.

Absolutely! The article from the Jerusalem Post about the Temple Mount visit says:

“Why are you apologizing all the time?” Palin asked her guides.

Palin expressed regret that she would not be able to visit Nazareth or Bethlehem during her brief stay in Israel, but promised that she would soon come back for longer.

I don't think that Palin is the incompetent one in this picture, but whoever she has making these kind of arrangements needs to be replaced with someone who knows what they are doing.

You are very new here so you might not have been following the history of her trip. That is exactly why she went. If you really want to know, there are ways to follow the future president here on FR.

There is really no need to embarrass yourself by posting blindly from an ignorant position. Hope that helps.

The headline for this story tells us volumes about the thing that the left fears most from Sarah Palin.

They are furious to the point of incoherent rage over the thought of Sarah giving birth to a Down’s syndrome child rather than have an abortion. Trig’s birth confronts their lies about what abortion really is.

If this was anyone else, the headline would have used the word “cancel.” IMHO

It’s still there.

“Palin expressed regret that she would not be able to visit Nazareth or Bethlehem during her brief stay in Israel, but promised that she would soon come back for longer.’

Bethlehem was never on the agenda. I call bunk.

If you read the thread you will see that she had already stated that she did NOT have time to visit Bethlehem on this trip. Now, if I was on a trip to Jerusalem to burnish my foreign policy creds and my time was limited, but I’m a good Christian and would really love to be able to just get a look at the place of my Savior’s birth, I would jump in a car and get as close as possible where I could get a look at the town or even part of the town, I would do that. They took her to a monastery where she could get a good view of the town. She was rushed because she had a date with Bibi and his wife for dinner. So why are you still harping on this?

If it was “unclear”, why did they mention it? Why wasn’t it “unclear” that perhaps Mrs. Palin received some kind of threats for going to Bethlehem, not that she didn’t realize it was in Palestinian territory. That seems much more likely to me than maybe she didn’t know where Bethlehem was.

What Mrs. Palin failed to realize is that "Palestinian territory" is like the polar bear exhibit at the zoo.

It's amusing that we have supplied them a habitat among human beings, but for crying out loud, don't climb in there with them.

Palin is being guarded by members of the Shin Bet while in Israel. They have been assigned to her personally by PM Netanyahu.

Unfortunately, while Nazareth is in the Southern Galilee, Bethlehem is deep in P.A. Territory. I suspect that the Shin Bet received a tipoff from their spies in the P.A. that her security in Bethlehem could not be assured. They pulled back at the last minute.

All of her itinerary is being handled through the Shin Bet while she is in Israel. She will even take El Al to Miami. Netanyahu will leave nothing to chance.

Her Zionist convictions have probably gotten around on the West Bank. Let's be clear about something; without a heavy escort and assurances from the P.A., going into the West Bank is like going into Gaza for her.

Best,

Chris

The more the media twists and distorts virtually everything Sarah says or does, revealing their intense fear and loathing of her, the more I am convinced that she MUST be the One in 2012.

Agreed - her Israeli security likely got wind of possible problems in Bethlehem, and advised her to cancel.

One note - Bethlehem is not “deep” within PA territory; it is actually across a valley from Gilo, the southernmost “suburb” of Jerusalem. Having lived for years in Beit Jala, across from Bethlehem, we could see Gilo from our street. We haven’t been back for many years, but I believe the “border” checkpoint is in the vicinity of Rachel’s Tomb on Hebron Road. That’s a few blocks from where we lived - but it might as well be a hundred miles.
