CA GOP has first openly gay board member

Lost amidst all insider bickering, Haley Barbour question-dodging, press-banning and John Bolton sabre-rattling at the weekend California Republican convention was a bit of history:

The party elected its first openly gay board member. And we didn't see a hoot of protest about it.

"Well, openly gay," quipped Gregory Gandrud, who just took his seat on the 23-member board. The 50-year-old Carpinteria (Santa Barbara County) resident is a longtime party activist, and Capinteria council member from 2002-2006.

So about being "the first" -- a caveat: The California Log Cabin Republicans believe he is the first California Republican Party board member. Gandrud does, too. National Log Cabiners could only think of one other person on a national board. But the CRP itself isn't sure:

...

It's a bit strange that the party didn't announce it at the convention, especially when new party chair Tom Del Beccaro and other officials made such an effort to talk about how the party was going to reach out to new audiences.

Gandrud told us he didn't make it an issue in his campaign. .. "asked if I was going to make it an issue in my campaign. I told them, 'I don't plan on it. I hope nobody else does,'" Gandrud told us.

And no one did. Perhaps that Republican "pup tent" just got a little bigger. Among Gandrud's endorsers: GOP party chair Tom Del Beccaro, Treasurer Mike Osborn and state Sen. Tony Strickland -- none known for their liberal tendencies.

Gandrud thought it was a positive that the uber-conservative California Republican Assembly -- while it didn't endorse him -- didn't actively oppose him or fund a rival candidate to run against him. He's not married to his partner of four years, but they have been registered domestic partners for three.

I won't be sharing my "pup tent" with a queer.

The "big tenters" in the republican party can take a hike.

What does being “openly gay” accomplish? I mean, does it balance a budget? Is it a requisite for supporting the Second Amendment? Why is it so damned important that he be gay and a Republican? Nothing, ergo, in all respects, other than rubbing it in the face of conservative Republicans, it serves NO purpose.

When push comes to shove, homosexuals will always put social issues ahead of economic issues, and they will always emphasize Liberalism in their social viewpoints.

The guy may not know it himself, but he's a Democrat.

In schools, churches, and Republican gatherings, homosexuals should be identified and deprived of authority. They will always introduce moral corruption. Always. They should be ministered to, but they cannot be allowed to lead, for they will lead astray.

Who gives a rip.

As long as he supports traditional marriage, he’d get my vote.

You can’t be proud of homosexual behavior and be conservative or Christian. It is impossible and by promoting dysfunctional behavior in the Republican party is to try to destroy everything they stand for=Rights from God (no Bible allowed because it calls the behavior an abomination—no freedom of religion and thought. Reeducation camps required to force the abnormal onto normal thinking people. Freedom?

They are condemning the Founding principles of the nation....all Founders found homosexuality an evil and outlawed the behavior. It is destructive in so many ways and does not promote a civil society built on Natural Law Theory. It is sexist and teaches hate of opposite sex and promotes lust over family.

Why not embrace pederasty like all homosexual societies embrace...after all it is the same behavior....just a little age discrimination? Stupid gutless people to tell homosexuals the truth....that their behavior is dysfunctional and sick.

Come on Republicans...get some common sense!!!!!! Don’t cowtow to Satan.

“Log Cabin” (gag) Republicans of course.

It used to be that if a Republican was gay, only his best friend knew for sure.

Will they start reaching out to conservatives now? I thought not.

My point is, it doesn’t SAY I’m straight. You are just assuming. However a gay person would probably have the fact that they are gay written in their profile!
