Liberty Dollar creator convicted in federal court
Asheville Citizen Times | March 19, 2011 | Clarke Morrison

The leader of a group that marketed a fake currency called Liberty Dollars in the Asheville area and elsewhere has been found guilty by a federal jury of conspiracy against the government in a case of “domestic terrorism.”

Bernard von NotHaus was convicted Friday at the conclusion of an eight-day trial in U.S. District Court in Statesville. The jury deliberated less than two hours, according to the Department of Justice.

Charges remain pending against William Kevin Innes, an Asheville man who authorities said recruited merchants in Western North Carolina willing to accept the “barter” currency, according to court records. Innes was indicted along with von NotHaus in 2009.

“Attempts to undermine the legitimate currency of this country are simply a unique form of domestic terrorism,” U.S. Attorney Anne Tompkins said. “While these forms of anti-government activities do not involve violence, they are every bit as insidious and represent a clear and present danger to the economic stability of this country.”

The case was investigated by the FBI, Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office and U.S. Secret Service with help from the U.S. Mint.

“We are determined to meet these threats through infiltration, disruption and dismantling of organizations which seek to challenge the legitimacy of our democratic form of government,” Tompkins said.

Von NotHaus, 67, faces up to 25 years in prison during sentencing, which hasn’t been scheduled. The government also is seeking the forfeiture of about 16,000 pounds of Liberty Dollar coins and precious metals valued at nearly $7 million.

As far as undermining the U.S. economy goes, if that's the basis for a terrorism charge, will they ask Rio to extradite our absentee president?

Zero...at Carnival!!!!

The homeland security farce was designed ...not to protect us...but to way to control free men. No other reason.

Just like the other “terrorism branch”...the IRS, it is impossible for the free citizen NOT TO VIOLATE some regulation or law that is the domain of those systems for the complexity and overlap is beyond belief.

Between the two, we have no freedoms.

So, if you shoe my horse, and I pay you with a butchered hog (altered from it's 'bullion' state ... I'm guilty.

You too ... for receiving.

VALKYRIE !!

Without the enabler, a lot, if not all this insanity would never come to be.

One good thing though ... the lunatics are now identified.

Vaquero,

You really need to give a heads up when posting a picture like this.

I was sitting here, having my first cup of coffee. Puked all over myself.

Where should I send my bill from the cleaners.

I think the real reason he was arrested was because he was related to Dr. Von Nostrand of New York City.

You got it.

These days, if you want to be involved in criminal activity, become a politician.

The reason that every state and the federal government has laws against robbery and larcency is that the government doesn't like competition.

This is an utter travesty of justice! Does he have a legal defense fund where people can send money?

This is all about the 16,000 lbs of silver & gold & also to keep the FED in business... not to mention so this huge shipment of Ron Paul Coins didn’t hit the public.

If Bernard von NotHaus is guilty of fake currency then isn’t the FED also guilty... as the Constitution states that US currency is to be coined in silver & gold?

Remember, the Federal Reserve is NOT the Gov’t... it is a group or private (corruption) corp to control all people.
Basically, it all boils down to the gov’t wanting the 16,000 lbs of silver & gold... talk about crooks!!

Just to answer 2harddrive... the coins are NOTHING close to looking like US Coins... it was the gov’t’s excuse to take this whole program down & more importantly... to steal all the gold & silver, all 16,000 lbs!!

As someone said, here is a guy whole provided coins at a little over spot & now is worth much more then issued... on the other hand you have the FED with their fiat currency notes worth much less then issued... The question is WHO do you Trust?

You have a sound argument and I agree with you. What I don't understand is how could a jury not see the same way? It looks like a simple case of the government wanting to steal 7 million dollars worth of silver and the jury is letting them do it.

The question is WHO (or what) do you Trust?

Good question, I would trust silver (or gold) coins in my hand over paper from a bankrupt government.

But the attack by Hasan at Fort Hood was not a case of “domestic terrorism”?

This thread has nothing to do with logic.

Maybe not.

It would be interesting to get the T-dept's arguments that were so convincing that the jury only took a couple hours to unanimously agree.   The court docs should be public record, anyone got a link?  We should be focusing on money/trade and we're getting a lot of name-calling/violent-threats.

Unless of course I'm wrong here and logic really doesn't belong here.

I bought a one ounce .999 Liberty “coin” on eBay for $46 right after this verdict was announced. Since then the seller has raised the price of similar ones to $99.

the coins are NOTHING close to looking like US Coins

From the article:

The coins were marked with the dollar sign, the words “dollar,” “USA,” “Liberty,” “Trust in God” (instead of “In God We Trust”) and other features associated with legitimate U.S. coins.

That's close enough to counterfeiting for me.

Now, if he'd stamped them "Joe's Coins" or something, I'd have more trouble with his conviction.
