USS MOUNT WHITNEY, Mediterranean Sea, Mar 22, 2011 — Two crew members ejected from their U.S. Air Force F-15E Strike Eagle when the aircraft experienced equipment malfunction over northeast Libya, March 21, 2011 at approximately 10:30 p.m. CET.

Both crew members ejected and are safe.

The aircraft, based out of Royal Air Force Lakenheath, England, was flying out of Aviano Air Base in support of Operation Odyssey Dawn at the time of the incident.

The cause of the incident is under investigation.

The identities will be released after the next of kin have been notified.

Joint Task Force Odyssey Dawn is the U.S. Africa Command task force established to provide operational and tactical command and control of U.S. military forces supporting the international response to the unrest in Libya and enforcement of United Nations Security Council Resolution (UNSCR) 1973. UNSCR 1973 authorizes all necessary measures to protect civilians in Libya under threat of attack by Qadhafi regime forces.

According to press reports. The pilot and crew member were picked up by rebels somewhere outside Benghazi.

“The identities will be released after the next of kin have been notified. “

Next of kin? Kinda the wrong context for that isn’t it.

...The identities will be released after the next of kin have been notified...

You don't usually notify next of kin of they're alive.

I’d want to be notified if this happened to someone in my family, before it appears on TV.

It’ll be good to hear them once they’re back home—nice to know who these ‘rebels’ are that we’re fighting for.

You do in the event they are in hostile territory and not in our hands. The rebels are not part of “our” hands, especially since they are supported by the Muslim Brotherhood and now AQ.

NBC reports one crew member was rescued by U.S. search and resue, the other by rebels. The other crew member is in the process of being picked up by U.S. search and rescue.

Mechanical failure is being blamed for the crash east of Benghazi with the pilot and crew member safely ejecting.

F-15E Strike Eagle cost = $32 million in 1998, in 2011 close to $100 million to replace.

But i guess they do “love” us at the moment because we are doing their work right now.
Of course this will change the moment we are done helping them to get the power.

I hope we are savvy enough to nuke the remains of the aircraft so the Chicoms have to work harder to steal the technology.

These aircraft have had the crap flow out of them. We should have taken up Boeing’s offer to build new ones for $68mm a copy.

Terrible, criminal to send our best young men to war without the best equipment money can buy.

The F-15E is old enough that Slick Willie probably already sold them the technology, or they’ve stolen it. The E variant first flew in 1986.

Really? So we’re bombing who, where, why and for what? Anyone have a scorecard?

so true and it goes to my point of why the notification before one of the next of kin sees it on TV as noted in the post before mine.

I doubt there is much left.

I wonder if the malfunction had anything to do with being hit by a missile or cannon fire.

Glad the crew is safe.
Loved Lakenheath when I was there way back when.

Are you serious? The Chicoms already have all of the technology, the five-axis milling machines to build it and the training to operate it. Twenty-plus years of unimpeded if not assisted spying, ten of which we know they had/have direct links to the White House for access to anything. Our "friends" in Germany and Israel have gladly sold China our technology and our universities are training up the next generation of Chicoms to understand and implement the advanced machine learning principles to guide robotics and cyber warfare.

Sadly, we are getting to the point where we need to spy on the Chinese for the next generation of gear. Not that it would really benefit the West much - we closed down our mines and factories years ago, and lost the cyber war when we let Google track and control everything else.
