Twitter and other social networks have provided social scientists with unprecedented means of measuring human interaction. As it turns out, that fact has implications for the media bias debate.

In a study to be released next month, three Duke University researchers rank politicians and other public figures by political ideology as measured by a formula that incorporates whom they follow on Twitter, and who follows them. "The results dovetailed with ideological ranking systems based on the politicians’ voting records," the New York Times reported on Monday.

If the study is accurate, it demonstrates just how liberal some of America's most prominent journalists really are. Check below the break for some key findings concerning on the not-so-neutral news media.

According to the Duke study:

- NBC's Chuck Todd and CBS's Katie Couric are almost as far left as the Daily Kos,

- The Washington Post and MSNBC are more liberal than far-left blog Firedoglake,

- NBC's Brian Williams and the Los Angeles Times are further left than Andrew Sullivan's blog the Daily Dish,

- MSNBC's Joe Scarborough, a former Republican congressman, is significantly left of center.

The two accounts that have the least in common will be the most conservative and the most liberal. Among members of the House of Representatives those accounts belonged to Michelle Bachmann and John Conyers, respectively.

I think there is tremendous possibility in some of the recent software being produced.

The Watson program won handily on Jeopardy.
Voice recognition software has come a long, long way.

If we could feed videotapes or newspaper coverage into a computer and come to conclusions, it would be very useful:

This frontpage news report is further Left than this speech by Castro.
This newsreport by Katie Couric is further Left than this essay by Nancy Pelosi.
This speech by Barack Obama contains two facts which can be verified: America was founded over two hundred years ago, and he was elected in 2008. The rest cannot be verified.

Think of the possibilities!

Chuck Todd has never spoken a word not presented to him by Obamao.

As for Couric.........she doesn’t really need any coaching.

Excellent points!

What about having future televised election maps showing Republican wins in red, white, and blue stripes, while demoncrap wins are in brownshirt BROWN, with some sinister black logo?

Great idea for a blog somewhere? Fox News?

It was originally GOP in Blue and DNC in Red. But the libs in the press had that changed because they didn't like their allies, the DNC, being linked to the color red.

I"m always remember 1984 like this...

Not quite. Blue indicated the incumbent party - Reagan in 84, Bush in 88 and 92, Clinton in 96, and Gore in 2000. It didn’t stick to one party until 2000.

100% correct.

At first I knew what they did and why and I was upset.

Now, I kinda like the color.

Probably because Firedoglake opposed Obamacare (though for the wrong reasons...they were hard-core public option fans)
