Feds Uncover Sophisticated Drug Smuggling Ring ( Khat from Somalia )
The Indy Channel ^ | February 23, 2011

Drug Travels From Africa To Indianapolis In 48 Hours.

Most residents of Indianapolis, including many in the law enforcement community, have never heard of the drug called khat...over the past three years, hundreds of pounds of the drug have been sold on the streets of Indianapolis, mostly to people of African descent...

Khat is a plant that grows plentifully in east Africa, specifically in Kenya, Ethiopia and Somalia.

Users chew the leaves of the plant to release a compound called cathinone, which is considered a "schedule 1" amphetamine and hallucinogen under U.S. law... traffickers used cell phones and sophisticated code to smuggle the drug from Africa to the United Kingdom, then to the United States and finally Indianapolis.

The smugglers used UPS, FedEx and the U.S. Postal system to move shipments of khat into Indianapolis

I know of one of its citizens that is acting like it has had too much khat over the last 2 years.

Meh...this is an old story here in Columbus and Minneapolis.

Bottom line, they'll get away with it on multicultural and religious grounds.

You can smuggle a physical product over wireless? Who knew?

Just for the general FYI, the active ingredient in khat is cathinone. If I understand it correctly, chewing khat is like taking low-grade speed, though obviously it varies by the amount chewed, strength of the leaves, etc.

Sophisticated and Somalia in the same sentence? Color me stunned.

Anyhow, why is khat such a big deal and caffeine not?

Caffiene isn’t a drug. It’s a dopamine inhibitor blocker. Your body’s own dopamine is the drug.

The men sit around a table, chew khat, drink tea, and plan big things. Kinda like a middle east version of Kentucky meth heads in a debate. Same dental results too.

More on Khat.

Khat

Khat is in the Celastraceae family. There aren't many medicinal or euphoric plants in that family that I know of.

OK, they chew the stuff and it makes their breath stinky, rots their teeth and makes them stupid. How would you tell the difference?

That's not correct. Caffeine is an adenosine inhibitor.

Caffeine readily crosses the blood–brain barrier that separates the bloodstream from the interior of the brain. Once in the brain, the principal mode of action is as a nonselective antagonist of adenosine receptors.[72][73] The caffeine molecule is structurally similar to the aglycone of adenosine, adenine, and is capable of binding the adenosine receptors on the surface of cells without activating them (an "antagonist" mechanism of action), thereby acting as a competitive inhibitor.

There was a khat bust in Meridian, Idaho (suburb of Boise) two years back. The local news media tried to spin it that the drug was headed to Minneapolis and points east, completely ignoring the Somalis, Sudanese and other African refugees that have been imported into downtown Boise over the last few years by our socialist mayor, Comrade Dave Bieter.

So Boise has been infiltrated as well. Disgusting. Well, you’ve joined the ranks of Columbus, Minneapolis and Lewiston, Maine as being infected by the absolute bottom of the barrel subhumans on the planet.

It is sort of like low grade speed combined with a marijuana buzz. You have to chew a whole shrubbery to get high. I tried some when I was on vacation in Yemen.

Yeah, one area of downtown, from about 14th-19th Streets, is so overrun with Somalis, many have taken to calling it "Little Mogadishu". Of course, to the Left Coasters that have also invaded over the last few years, that's absolutely wonderful.

Wasn't it Minneapolis where a Best Buy circular last year or the year before wished Muzzies a Happy Yak Shaving Day, or somesuch raghead holiday, during Thanksgiving weekend? We're not that bad yet, but Comrade Bieter is doing his damnedest to turn us into Portland or Seattle, Jr.

I was thinking it might make a nice ornamental around the foundation of the house but I’m not sure I want the elk buzzed up on a speed and pot-like high.

It was discovered by a shepherd that noticed his sheep were acting really strange, so . . . (wait for it) he decided to try eating whatever the sheep were eating. Dumb. It grows about 6 feet high. I don’t think it has a particularly attractive shape for landscaping. I’m a little surprised at its use here in the US, though, because it has to be freshly picked to get the buzz. It needs a high altitude volcanic soil to grow. I hiked through qhat terraces in the mountains of northwest Yemen on my vacation so I’ve seen a lot of it. You can probably get something that looks similar at Home Depot.

I have the altitude, 7,600 ft., but not the volcanic soil.
It's probably a bit too cold here in CO too.

In her book InfidelAayan Hirsi Ali had a great comment about Somali men in the Netherlands always giving excuses about not being able to do anything yet she said they always seemed to have fresh Khat.

I guess that means cocaine is not a drug then, by your definition, since it is also a dopamine inhibitor.

Cocaine

Cocaine (benzoylmethylecgonine) (INN) is a crystalline tropane alkaloid that is obtained from the leaves of the coca plant.[5] The name comes from "coca" in addition to the alkaloid suffix -ine, forming cocaine. It is a stimulant of the central nervous system, an appetite suppressant, and a topical anesthetic. Specifically, it is a serotonin–norepinephrine–dopamine reuptake inhibitor, which mediates functionality of these neurotransmitters as an exogenous catecholamine transporter ligand. Because of the way it affects the mesolimbic reward pathway, cocaine is addictive.[6]
