US Likely to Keep Combat Role After Libya Shift
Aol News/AP ^ | 25/3/11 | Erica Werner and Robert Burns

WASHINGTON -- The United States welcomed a partial handover for the Libyan air campaign to NATO on Thursday, but the allies apparently balked at assuming full control and the U.S. military was left in charge of the brunt of combat.

NATO agreed to take over command of the newly established no-fly zone over Libya, protective flights meant to deter Libyan strongman Moammar Gadhafi from putting warplanes in the air. That leaves the U.S. with responsibility for attacks on Gadhafi's ground forces and other targets, which are the toughest and most controversial portion of the operation.

The U.S had hoped the alliance would reach a consensus Thursday for NATO to take full control of the military operation authorized by the United Nations, including the protection of Libyan civilians and supporting humanitarian aid efforts on the ground. It was not immediately clear when the allies could reach agreement on the matter.

Here in Kiryat Arba, I hear an angry Imam shouting something at the mosque near me, too. This is not just Baghdad, and this is not just the “West Bank”. Anybody else near a Mosque hearing something? Say which part of the world you’re in, so we can put together the big Freepin’ picture.

This is not just Baghdad, and this is not just the “West Bank”.

I figured this might be coordinated since I heard it going on at two separate mosques.

Very angry sounding shouting and I distinctly heard the work "Amrikee" once.

It's calm now, but I didn't care for that one bit.

I'm on a big base; I'm sure the intel folks are all over this.

Imam said his piece over here, too. These things are generally pre-recorded, along with the shouting and other noises. It sounds like a mob of people on the streets, ready to kill, but the said streets are empty. We have muzak. They have newzak.

Keep your fingers crossed for me or better yet, please say a little prayer.

I don't have too much longer here before I head back home to Texas. :-)

No, becuase I don’t like the “F” word, even though “H” probably isn’t much better.

Today wasn't pre-recorded. Usually, the prayer sessions are, but this one went a little wild.

This has happened a couple of other times since I've been over here and it's usually that Iran-funded creep Sadr behind it.

Was your experience today live or Memorex?

No, no...we're fine.

We're behind lots of walls with razor wire on top and well-armed US military guys around.

This is just another blip on the Adventures in Iraq screen. It's much more mellow here these days than it was in the insane years from '04 through mid-'07 and the Insanity Redux in spring of '08. :)

Mookie just likes to stir things up every now and then so he can pretend he's relevant.

But, thanks for your concern.

It was a Shiite mosque? If it was Suni, and Sadr’s behind it, that’s a much more disturbing development. Ours was Memorex. Definitely. Easy to tell, because nobody was in the street. There’ve been many “wild” sounding rallies without a single person in attendance.
