The number of state employees that have joined public sector unions has skyrocketed in the past decade. Over 10,000 state employees have joined unions, and still more requests are pending that would increase the number of unionized state employees to nearly 97 percent. But there's a dilemma:
If pending requests are approved by the Illinois Labor Relations Board, nearly 97 percent of state workers would be represented by unions — including many employees once considered management. Only 1,700 “bosses” would be left out of nearly 50,000 state employees.
There's concern about unionizing management, though, and ILRB needs to make a decision on just who will be allowed to join unions and if managers are, to whom will their loyalties be in the midst of negotiations or a job dispute?
Pending requests to unionize have come from employees whose jobs traditionally fell into the category of “boss:” prison wardens and their assistants, state agencies’ chief fiscal officers, deputy agency directors, chiefs of staff, senior personnel officers and liaisons to the Legislature at social service, employment and regulatory agencies, according to the AP analysis of Labor Relations Board records.
Since 2003, when Gov. Rod Blagojevich took office, about 10,100 state employees under Quinn’s control have joined unions — 75 percent of them lining up with AFSCME, records show. That’s more than four times the 2,300 who joined from 1995 to 2003.
Currently, the Labor Relations Board is considering 31 applications seeking unionization for more than 1,100 employees. That would bump up the number of unionized state employees to 96.5 percent from 94.3 percent, according to an analysis of CMS numbers.
Guess what percentage of Wisconsin's state workers were unionized? 60 percent.

I can see why the taxpayers are so pissed off.
All state employees will be unionized except for the political appointees
But it’s a safe-haven for fleebaggers, practically a cottage industry!
Could it be because the state has employed that many new workers? Gee, what wizards figure these things out?
Do you have any evidence that IL voters are pissed? They seem to keep putting the same people in office. Maybe I just don't see all of the anger as I don't live there anymore and haven't for many years.
It’s not the “voters”. The “voters” are going to keep electing people who promise them freebies and handouts (Their “american dream”). It’s the taxpayers who are pissed and, according to what I’ve been hearing and reading, they are all moving their businesses out of there.
Most unionization is forced. Certainly ALL Gov’t employee member is forced. Here in NY State, dues are deducted and you are automatically registered whether you want to join or not.
I live near Chicago. In 2010, Republicans gained seats in the state senate and state house. The state treasurer and comptroller (both Democrats) didn’t run for re-election, and both of them were replaced by Republicans.
You need a State like Illinois to demonstrate how not to do things.
I understand CAT has threatened to re-evaluate their HQ. If Motorola and Schneider do the same it would cripple Ill.

Well sadly that is the only way it will change.
Illinois is not a right to work state so the individual is compelled to join the union as a condition of employment. What a deal for Rats. Pass laws that FORCE employees to join the union and pay dues which end back up in the pockets of the Rats.
Texas and Florida will likely gain some of the business’s moving from Illinois.
