Taliban Condemn Attacks on Libya - KABUL, Afghanistan Col. Muammar el-Qaddafi has at least one good friend in the outside world the Taliban in Afghanistan. "The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan strongly condemns this politically motivated and uncalled-for intervention and adventure by the Western countries in the internal conflict of the people of Libya..."Do you have a theory to explain why that is?
Are the Taliban now "good muslims" along with Khadafi, while the evil Saudis are the bad muslims, because they supported the Taliban?
Is that what you're trying to say?
Personally I'm all for bombing the holy hell out of Libya and I think we should bomb lots more muslim countries too.
The Taliban is beginning to pick up on a growing theme in the media - that al Qaeda is in fact a significant element of the rebel force - and are ginning up a disinformation campaign to convince us that we should be attacking Gaddafi because the Taliban "supports" Gaddafi. It's the oldest trick in the book. We don't do that kind of dissembling much because we're Americans. Muslims will say whatever seems convenient at the moment.
The one thing that sticks out in my mind is the prevalence of variants of the burka among the female Libyan population, despite the fact that Gaddafi doesn't actually require it. The following West Point chart confirms my initial impression - that Libyan society is much more Islamist than the press either knows about or lets on:
Just as the Saudi Royal Family keeps a lid on Islamism in Saudi Arabia by parroting many of its shibboleths, Gaddafi more or less performs the same function in Libya. But to have al Qaeda actually in power in Libya would be a serious problem.
Note that the 84% of the jihadists came from Darnah and Benghazi, both rebel strongholds that were (as pointed out in the West Point study) previously the scene of Islamist uprisings in the mid-1990's.
Personally I’m all for bombing the holy hell out of Libya and I think we should bomb lots more muslim countries too.
