NATO commander Adm. James Stavridis says it is too early to be talking about an exit strategy from Libya. He said a ground force may be needed if rebels drive Muammar GaddafiMuammar Gaddafi out.
"When you look at the history of NATO, having gone through this, as many on this committee have, with Bosnia and Kosovo, it's quite clear that the possibility of [the need for] a stabilization regime exists," he said. "And so, I have not heard any discussion about it yet, but I think that history is in everybody's mind as we look at the events in Libya," he told the U.S. Senate on Tuesday.
NATO will be taking over the U.N. ordered mission later this week.

Tactically - this appears to be a major snafu.
From what I’ve heard we are not sending in ground troops. From what I’ve seen at various news websites (pictures and such) - the “rebels” we are supporting are a fairly rag-tag group riding in Toyota trucks with machine guns. Tactically (and I’m intentionally leaving the politics out of this post)...they are only capable of following up - unimpeded - behind our (U.N.) air strikes. So without sending in ground forces all we can do is pin Gadaffi’s forces into cities like Tripoli. We can’t “starve em out” because it’s a huge city and that would mean starving hundreds of thousands of innocent civillian inhabitants (not exactly a humanitarian thing to do). Plus Gadaffi has TONS of money they say...$6 billion in gold in the Bank of Tripoli alone...along with billions in other currencies....so he can continue to pay his soldiers (if I’m not mistaken I read where he just gave every soldier a promotion). So what the heck can you do?
NO blood for European OIL!!!! the ONLY “ground troops” should come from Europe.
“NO blood for European OIL!!!! the ONLY ground troops should come from Europe.”
Well you do realize that oil is a worldwide commodity right? And if the Europeans can’t get their oil from Lybia they will bid against us for our Persian Gulf oil. Supply and Demand.
I do agree that we should stay away from sending in ground troops though.
China is the biggest user of Libyas oil...let them send there people in there. Note the hundreds and hundreds of Chinese people they had to take out of Libya when things got heated there...cut and run and lwt the world pick up what’s happening...but never China. They use the world as a chess board for their purpose and pleassure.
The first casualty of kinetic military action is the truth.
We do not get much oil from Libya...sure it’s a “worldwide” commodity....but....it isn’t located worldwide....we have enough of our own....if only we’d DRILL!
we do not have boots on the ground
we have flipflops on the ground and therefore plausible deniability
That balloon doesn’t fly when it’s made of lead.
Skip it, Skippy.
Where is the story about the pilots who ejected when their plane malfunctioned? Who were they? How were they rescued? Where were they rescued? Where are they now? Why haven’t we heard more about this?
Why are we involved in Libya all of a sudden? Makes no sense at all. Blowing up shit in Mexico would make more sense to me. What are the Israelis saying about this CF?
“We do not get much oil from Libya...sure its a worldwide commodity....but....it isnt located worldwide....we have enough of our own....if only wed DRILL!”
+++++++++++++++++++
Use theirs first...only common sense. They sell us their oil until it’s gone, then we sell them food to get our money back.
The war dogs want more americans killed.
P.S. - as long as the Ogalala Aquifer holds out (fingers crossed).
This is where Obama gets to build his own military force. At first it’ll still be called NATO, but it will have to evolve to include his Arab pals. The US might still keep a small military, but that’s just a little regional defense force. The bigtime is having your own world army.
“Why are we involved in Libya all of a sudden? Makes no sense at all”
Actually, if what I’ve read recently is true - Lybia not only has oil (and maybe much of it not even discovered yet)..they also sit on top of an aquifer deep below the ground. Now I only read that from a Brit paper - but if it’s true you could be looking at an area (when well developed) that is a combination of Iowa and Kuwait. Possibly thousands of square miles of irrigated productive land interrupted occasionally by oil wells.
Yes remember, “days” not weeks and no boots on ground...Wow, how short do they think our memories are?
