Obama to Set Goal of Reducing Oil Imports by One-Third in Decade (but won't allow new drilling)

With gasoline prices rising, oil supplies from the Middle East pinched by political upheaval and growing calls in Congress for expanded domestic oil and gas production, President Obama on Wednesday will set a goal of a one-third reduction in oil imports over the next decade, aides said Tuesday.

The president, in a speech to be delivered at Georgetown University, will say that the United States needs, for geopolitical and economic reasons, to reduce its reliance on imported oil, according to White House officials who provided a preview of the speech on the condition that they not be identified. More than half of the oil burned in the United States today comes from overseas and from Mexico and Canada.

Mr. Obama will propose a mix of measures, none of them new, to help the nation cut down on its thirst for oil. He will point out the nation’s tendency, since the first Arab oil embargo in 1973, to panic when gas prices rise and then fall back into old gas-guzzling habits when they recede.

He will call for a consistent long-term fuel-savings strategy of producing more electric cars, converting trucks to run on natural gas, building new refineries to brew billions of gallons of biofuels and setting new fuel-efficiency standards for vehicles. Congress has been debating these measures for years.

The president will also repeat his assertion that despite the frightening situation at the Fukushima Daiichi reactor complex in Japan, nuclear power will remain an important source of electricity in the United States for decades to come, aides said.

Good, Obama can set an example and get rid of that 3 mpg gas-hog limousine in which he rides.

The green agenda is not reasonable for the nations needs, develop alternatives after supplying what the country needs, it is totally rediculous to go any other way, another way to strip the people of their money..
Drill now, refineries now, shale oil, natural gas ..no limits, this is a national crisis and is not the time to be stupid...

Unrealistic! All to get to a place where the environment is pure, yet energy is abundant. And when we reach that? The enviro-wackos will say it is not enough.

Fox & Friends just had a Stewart Varney report that federal employees used a record amount of fuel in the past year, exceeding the previous year by 350,000,000 gallons.

The first place BO should reduce fuel consumption is the bloated, wasteful federal government that he heads. Sell Air Force One and let him go through the TSA body searches like the rest of us. Democrats insist that equality is their goal, so they shouldn’t mind traveling like the rest of us.

And you say that to a country whose children have been taught that being smart gets them no further down the line than being stupid? They don't know any other way and it is impossible to convince their feeble little indoctrinated minds anyway.

This has the makings for a great campaign commercial with images of motorists stranded on the freeway with no gas.

I can see it now; Barack Obama, leaving Americans stranded.

What a wisenheimer.

He’s thinking that we’ll be “reporting” to China soon anyway who will simply dictate that we get less oil.

Most of the drilling in the world today is happening right here in the USA.

You are correct, but we have to start the dialogue even though we will be labeled as extreme..

Where?

According to the EIA, the US produces about 5 million barrels per day (Mbd) domestically. Some of that is exported; we import, gross, about 13.8 Mbd, making our total consumption about 18 Mbd. About 6 Mbd of our imports come from OPEC countries, including about 2.2 Mbd from the Persian Gulf. Saudi Arabia is our biggest supplier in the Gulf, responsible for 1.5 Mbd (about 8% of our total consumption). Interestingly, though, our major suppliers are our nearest neighbors - Canada and Mexico. Both of them give us more oil individually than Saudi Arabia, Canada 2.5 Mbd (14% of consumption) and Mexico 1.6 Mbd (9% of consumption).

"This is an evil man. Obama is truly the worst person ever to hold office."

You took the words right out of my mouth.
Jimmy Carter & Slick must love ZERO. He did the impossible.
He made them look good. Well not good but better.

As of this week 52% of the rigs in operation in the world are drilling in the US.

Could we be drilling more?

Yes.

Is it a complete falsehood to state that we cannot drill in the USA?

Yes.

I wear that placard every day, with pride. Bring it on Schmuckie Schumer, keep yakin and your utter arrogance will bring you down a few more notches before you ever have a chance of figuing anything out beyond the end of your nose.

Goodness, if they thought that 11/2/10 was a wake up call, then hang on folks because they are going to wake up to a nightmare on 11/6/12, if we can get that far.

Maybe in the dentist office, not looking for oil. Sorry to burst your buble, but we are not drilling for oil here.

You might want to explain what the word “we” is in your statement. Of those 52%, how many are US owned and operated companies. Better yet, why do “we” have to supply the rest of the world?

52% are drilling or pumping? Then if they are pumping, then how much of the current production around the world is being pumped by those 52%? Oh boy, numbers games!
