ORION TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) — The United Auto Workers union would be open to expanding a wage structure with lower-paid workers to keep General Motors Co. factories open or reopen closed plants, a top union official said Tuesday.

Vice President Joe Ashton, who handles GM bargaining for the UAW, said the union "will look at anything when it comes to negotiations that will retain jobs."

He made the comments during a press event at a factory in Orion Township, Mich., near Detroit, where at least 40 percent of the hourly workers will be paid about half the $28 per hour wage of longtime UAW workers. His comments were reported by The Detroit News and the Detroit Free Press.

The UAW must realize that there are plenty of people who are building cars in America that don't belong to the UAW, or any union, and they are doing just fine.

In time, the UAW will stand for, Unemployed Auto Workers.

I’m guessing them mean a lower starting wage which will rapidly rise.

No, they’re not.

And that’s why I spend 1/4 of my year in Mexico, now, instead of 1.5 miles down the street at the plants we closed.

GM can build anything that they want, or are told to, in any manner that they choose.

This household won’t buy Government Motors.

It's not really crow. They're protecting the salaries of existing (I'd use the word "tenured", but it isn't a perfect fit) UAW members/workers, while supporting a policy that will allow their ranks to grow with new members.

In 10-15 years the unions will be up to their old tricks.

Having eviscerated the US auto industry, along with congressional and EPA progressives, they now will negotiate for lower wages. What a mensch.
