Japan nuclear crisis: Pressure to widen evacuation zone
UN nuclear monitors have advised Japan to consider expanding the evacuation zone around the stricken reactors at the Fukushima Daiichi plant.
An exclusion zone with a radius of 20km (12 miles) is currently in place but the UN says safe radiation limits have been exceeded 40km away.

The UN's nuclear watchdog (International Atomic Energy Agency, IAEA) found safe radiation limits had been exceeded at the village of Iitate, 40km north-west of the nuclear plant.
"The highest values were found in a relatively small area in the north-west from the Fukushima power plant and the first assessment indicates that one of the IAEA operational criteria for evacuation is exceeded in Iitate village," senior IAEA official Denis Flory said.
Japan's top government spokesman, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano, said on Thursday that the IAEA had advised the government to "carefully assess the situation on the basis of this report".
"I don't think that this is something of a nature which immediately requires such action," he told reporters.

Fukushima could become UN Wild Life Refugee in time. Nobody will live there except animals and plants.

Hiroshima and Nagasaki are currently well populated health cities. The danger is exposure today.
The reports of radiation are extremely hard to interpret. Some are due to poor measurements and some are valid all reports are usually full of emotion. The hysteria of saying its 1000 times normal is quite misleading. 1000 times normal may be a safe level.
I don’t see the Japanese govt hiding anything. They are simply trying to get their hands around a massive massive problem.
Isn’t the radiation just going to continue to spread and wreak havoc on more and more of the country over time? You know, like liberalism.
Yes, this is a slow motion crisis which may still be played over months. On any given day, radiation leak may not be small, but it may add up over time to the level nobody can ignore.

Sure. Until it’s contained. Right now, there’s no end in sight.

Newer designs or not, a few more lessons might be:
Don’t falsify safety inspection reports at a nuclear power plant.
Maintain and test the backup systems.
Figure out a better solution for spent fuel.

We have a better solution for spent fuel, the libratards have chosen to block it. Forcing the industry to keep hazardous materials in less secure means of storage.
