Libya leader Muammar Gaddafi's armed forces are not close to breaking point despite hundreds of allied air strikes, American military chiefs have said.
Adm Mike Mullen told a US Congress committee Col Gaddafi's troops still had 10 times the rebels' firepower.
At the same hearing, Defence Secretary Robert Gates reiterated the US would put no "boots on the ground" in Libya.
Rebels and pro-Gaddafi forces appear to have reached a stalemate in their fight for control of the country.
In recent days, rebels have been urging international forces to conduct more air strikes.
Adm Mullen told the House of Representatives armed forces committee that bad weather had stopped them from identifying targets over the past three or four days.
"[The weather] has more than anything else reduced the impact... reduced the effectiveness, and has allowed the regime forces to move back to the east," the AFP news agency quoted him as saying.
Despite the weather, he said the air strikes since the beginning of the operation had wiped out between 20% and 25% of Col Gaddafi's forces.
"We have actually fairly seriously degraded his military capabilities. That does not mean he's about to break, from a military standpoint, because that's not the case," he said.

Top ranking officers in his army best consider what’s going to happen to them when their leader goes. Their lives won’t be worth a plug nickel.
Well, we need to just go in there with half a million troops on the ground, plus armor and air.
Should take us less than 10000 days to clear it all up.
A breakout of the hometowns of Libyan jihadists who showed up in Iraq:
Note that the 84% of the jihadists came from Darnah and Benghazi, both rebel strongholds that were (as pointed out in the West Point study) previously the scene of Islamist uprisings in the mid-1990's.
That buys lots of loyalty and talent.
Heck, if it didn't mean firing on Americans, I'd consider contracting to him, if he's paying in gold. Work here in the states is a little slow right now, and I've had too many checks from customers bounce the last couple of years.
“Gaddafi army ‘not at breaking point’”
Are the Western forces doing what I read the Muslims do? Aim in the general direction, and let Allah guide the missiles?
Seems to me after Billions of dollars, pounds, Francs, or Euro’s, of ordnance has been targeted at he whose name cannot be spelled uniformly in the Western Culture’s Palace, Mansion, Headquarters, Outhouse, etc. there should be something broken.
He also has said as long as he's in his position that will not change. He has to keep repeating this over and over and over before the dim-wits understand "none of our troops on the ground!"
Pure crazy talk.
We already have boots on the ground and anyone who denies that is lying. USSOC is there in at least moderate numbers...certainly more than a hundred.
We just don't have regular forces on the ground...YET.
Oh, we will. Bummer will take a shot at not losing face...but he'll back down before he loses his base.
Perhaps the CIA agents who were recently admitted to be working with the terrorists are wearing sneakers.
Qaddafi had backed off WMD and terrorism after Reagan counter attacked and then after the Iraq War, which he admitted was why he opened up to the West and gave up his WMD programs. So far he is winning this war, and if he does remain in power, it’s highly doubtful he would continue that policy - especially if he then knows he was able to survive a direct attack by the West - no longer any incentive to fear he would meet Saddam’s fate. And supposing that doesn’t happen and he is ousted - will a Taliban style regime take his place instead? This has the makings of being a complete disaster.
Mullen and Gates seem to be the problem. You have to ask yourselves, could these guys win any war? Maybe you should ask them to tell? Like “don’t ask, don’t tell”.
I wasn’t refering to the military needed from the start to pinpoint targets etc. I realize we would never go in without special forces and cia doing what they do...likely they were there even before this became a “war”.
As for regular forces...exactly...I don’t want our boys in there at all ever. Let the French and British carry out the footwork...once this becomes a total guerella warfare environment...am already hearing Gaddafi’s in that direction now.
Whut? A no fly zone can be hindered by weather? Who knew. Why did Bambi think we could win a push button war.
Another study counts few from Libya.
Both studies contain small sample sizes, and do not conclusively represent the thousands if not tens of thousands of foreign fighters in Iraq.

I don't see Libya listed.
>>>>>>>>When Qaddafi wins, payback is going to be a beotsch! Americans need to take precautions against the payback.>>>>>>>>>>
I think it is more precautions needed in case if Duffy is going to lose.
It will be a good starting point for a ME-wide Al-Qaedistan with all the oil and WMD they want.
He siad: "Not on my watch"
I haven't had any great fondness for Gates but I bless him now. I have a feeling he and bummer have had some go-rounds. Gates knows who the rebels are. He wants no part of putting out soldiers that have been fighting and dying for years against Al Qaeda to suddenly be told they now have to go fight FOR them. And indeed. it would be a terrible thing for the troops. The moral would be as bad as it cuold get. Just @#$%@&^% that traitorous, lily-livered, muzzie loving poor excuse for a human being that is causing this mess.
Mullen is tied up in this too. Whose running the Afghanistan fighting?
Is this a wag-the-dog scenario to keep us all from noticing that the TIC (T=traitor) if turning, valley by valley, the whole Kunar Province (in the high Hindu Kush Mts of north eastern Afghanistan) that our troops fought and sacrificed and died in for years, back over to OBL - just pulling out out troops and giving it all back to OBL. Now he can, once again, set up in the very place he planned and trained for 911.
Oh, you didn't know this was going on?
That's because you haven't yet learned to WATCH THE OTHER HAND!

per my above post.
With obummer - always WATCH THE OTHER HAND
First the Korengal
Now the Pech - so osama now has the Kunar Province back, a gift from ‘bummer. (I have an idea our commanders have just about had it with this slithering CIC. I would not be surprised to hear that Gates is gone any time now. He said no boots on the ground (in Libya) “not on my watch” (read the comments)
The West Point data comes from intelligence collected by GI's in the field. The MSNBC analysis (I would call it guesswork more than analysis) is obtained by looking at websites. The West Point report does point out that Saudi jihadis outnumber Libyan jihadis 2 to 1. But Saudi Arabia has 4x Libya's population. Which means on a per capita basis, Libya has twice as many jihadis as Saudi Arabia.
* But that's like saying Texas has more Democrats than Rhode Island; it's by definition true, since Texas has more Democrats than the entire population of Rhode Island, Democrats, Republicans and independents combined. What is more informative from a political standpoint is that Texas has a less Democrats as a % of the state population.
I can’t wait for the center-fuel tank explosions and other random, non-state-sponsored acts of terrorism to come. It’s going to be fantastic. I really missed the 90’s too.
Obama’s fault. Obama read a teleprompter and people died.
The question is, can we survive until we can vote him out of the White House?
OH! He meant Quadaffi! s/
In July 2007, the Los Angeles Times reported that 45% of all foreign militants targeting U.S. troops and Iraqi civilians and security forces are from Saudi Arabia; 15% are from Syria and Lebanon; and 10% are from North Africa. 50% of all Saudi fighters in Iraq come as suicide bombers. In the last six months, such bombings have killed or injured 4,000 Iraqis. According to a U.S. military press briefing on October 20, 2005, 312 foreign nationals from 27 different countries had been captured in Iraq from April to October 2005. This represents a component of the Iraqi resistance movement, which also includes a nationalist movement encompassing over 30 Shia and Sunni militias. Foreign Insurgents captured in Iraq in the 7-month period AprilOctober 2005:
Egypt - 78
Syria - 66
Sudan - 41
Saudi Arabia - 32 U.S. - 15
Iran - 13
Palestine - 12 Libya - 7
Turkey - 6
Lebanon - 3
India - 2
Quatar - 2
Others - 14
It seems to me that you can believe all kinds of secondary sources, including the CSIS, the relentlessly Obama-loving MSNBC and the border-line communist Guardian, or you can believe the people who are having to face the jihadis day-in and day-out, our GI's.
Because he is to busy putting homosexuals in the showers.
Gates has no credibility. Anyone that supported the homosexualization of the military is an enemy of America.
The rebels got an ill advised burst of confidence after the airstrikes started. They advanced too far, overreached and were decimated by the government forces. Now, in retreat, they'll bleed strength and initiative every day. Ghadaffi's forces are now traveling in pickup trucks, looking exactly like the rebels. There's no way we risk bombing them now. The ROE is so strict, they won't bomb anything that's not a clearly flagged military vehicle. The security forces will continue what they were doing two weeks ago. Namely, to grind the rebels into retreat, rout and slaughter.
So, do we arm the rebels? Even the odds yet again, until we get the results we want?
The problem is, the further east you go, the more radically Islamist the natives get. By the time we decide to arm the Libyans, the center of the country will have fallen. The only rebels left will be the hard core Islamists from east of Benghazi. The ones Libya used to export to Iraq as mujahideen rather than deal with them locally. I'm sure they'd love American arms and training.
All of this exposes just how little we thought this action through.
In terms of reliability, Wikipedia, home of the leftist brigade and assembled by anonymous people of dubious expertise and ideology, takes a distinct last place (way lower than the Guardian, MSNBC or CSIS) relative to a West Point report assembled with data from GI's in the field.
Israel asks the same question. I believe the destruction of Israel is the marxist's primary objective.
The LA Times numbers come from the U.S. Military. It seems to me you will believe what you want.
Myself, I see that the various reports only show a small fraction of the total number of foreign fighters in Iraq and I cannot come to the same conclusion that you do.
An 11 year FR member is using THE GUARDIAN as a source?’
Lots of FR sleepers being pulled out of the woodwork these days.
So we are the ones committing mass murder in obummers illegal war.
Qaddafi set at least two conditions for their release, 1.) that they don't participate in jihad in Libya, and 2.) that it's okay they take their jihad back to Iraq and Afghanistan, to fight against our GI's.
you need to remember that it's a tangled web because that's what comes 'When at first we practice to deceive/
This whole operation was not for the smoke-screened lies given.
"His" reasons have nothing to do with right or honor. It has to do with adding to the very large chunk of Africa and a HUGE stretch of Mediterranean Sea coast - and command of the Suez...to reinstate the Caliphate in it's old home -
Now that the Muslim Brotherhood is posed to take over Egypt - then add The large land of Libya - Quite a central base to expand out from, eh?
I cited three reports including one from US Military.
Take your stupid "sleeper" charge and stick it.
Sorry FRiend, but your logic is convuluted on this one. Whether or not Qaddafi needs to go is one thing; who we’re supporting is quite another thing, regardless of what Qaddafi and his son have done since Obomba was elected as President.
The English version spells ALL of this out
Why is more light not being shed on this publication?
This should be everywhere
Actually, all of the Muslim governments have released the foreign fighters we've handed to them. They've done so for the same reason as Gaddafi - the Muslim masses don't consider killing GI's a problem - continuing to imprison anti-American jihadis stirs up accusations that these Muslim governments are American puppets.
"I believe the destruction of Israel is the marxist's primary objective."
that is part of the prerequisite for the return of the Madhi - however it's spelled.
When the election went against obummer so badly, I suspect he and his handlers panicked and moved up their schedule. That is resulting in added chaos - and, hopefully, inadvertently showing their hand and find themselves 'hoisted by their own - or ANYONES! = petard."
Beside reestablishing the Caliphate in Tripoli and gaining control of the oil flow to Italy and above, there's the billions in gold that Qaddafi kept at home, not in the Swiss Bank.
I suspicion "the spoils" have already been agreed upon - Soros gels the gold, bummer and gang get the oil and the muzzies get a country to operate freely from. (in addition, obummer may have visions of himself as the Madhi...)
In fact, where Gaddafi merely released Libyans who were captured in Iraq, our Iraqi allies have released Iraqi guerillas who have killed GI's.
Sorry FRriend, but I suspect that you don't know what my position is and I suspect that your position is wussified.
Qaddafi killed 189 of our citizens at Lockerbie. Qaddafi killed our servicemen in Germany. Qaddafi has released all of the Al Qaeda associated LIFG fighters from his prisons over the last two year and Qaddafi has told them to head back to Iraq and Afghanistan to wage jihad.
My position, regardless of what ever the hell Obama is doing, is that we should remove the terrorist Qaddafi and that we should remove all Al Qaeda that we find.
Anything short of that is appeasement.
Do you actually disagree?
you got a link for the ENGLISH version?
The LA Times says it got the numbers from the US military. I don't see a source document. The West Point data comes from Special Operations Command and the report can be read in its entirety at the West Point website.
Obama SOP too.
Actually, anything short of that is making peace. Especially given that Gaddafi gave up his nukes and stopped sponsoring terrorist attacks against us. The North Vietnamese killed 60K of our men. The Chinese killed 100K, directly via the Korean War, and indirectly via the Vietnam War (via providing supplies, shelter and training for the North Vietnamese and inserting a tripwire force of 100K PLA troops to discourage US incursions into North Vietnam that could have won the war). If Gaddafi deserves to be toppled, what do the North Vietnamese and the Chinese deserve for us not to be called appeasers, given that they killed hundreds of times more Americans than Gaddafi did?
