Every couple years, I break out my copy of Gettysburg. It really is very authentic in a number of areas esp in reviving the legend of Joshua Chamberlain and the 20th Maine. A true national hero, who was forgotton until his autobiography went into the public domain in the 40s.
BUT....and here it the big BUT...Everytime Sheen comes on stage playing Robert E. Lee, I have to laugh. He’s as believeable in that part, as I would be playing Hamlet.
The worst, absolutely worst. THe dialogue is nicely crafted, so it lacked the actor. Did they go by his height? How did they choose him? Awful....absolutely awful. Like William Shatner singing McCarther Park...

I wonder how many people picked up on something Ghaddafi did a few weeks ago. He fully armed his people.

As an aside, I graduated from Gettysburg College the year they started filming the movie. My barber was an extra, and is quite obvious in Pickett's charge :-)

Sheen cheapens the whole movie. The rest of the characters were great.
The depiction of Gettysburg was very accurate. Lee’s dialogue too, was accurate, but they put the words in the mouth of a childlike actor. Sheen doesn’t come across as Lee because he’s not believeable to say the least.
He appears to young...to naive...
The script is what saved the movie from disaster Sheen.
Around the time after or before WWI a book came out, 50 of Maines most famous people. Chamberlain was not listed.
He lay in obscurity until his children neglected to renew the copywright of his autobiography. THen being in the public domain, he had a renaissance when in 1960 you had the rebirth of Civil War memorabilia and books.
Then he’s featured in the US Army Leadership Manual along with Patton and others, in fact, he’s the number one example of what a commanding officer should be like.
Sheen’s portrayal lacked the depth of Lee’s character.
