A majority of voters are fine with a partial shutdown of the federal government if thats what it takes to get deeper cuts in federal government spending.
A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 57% of Likely U.S. Voters think making deeper spending cuts in the federal budget for 2011 is more important than avoiding a partial government shutdown. Thirty-one percent (31%) disagree and say avoiding a shutdown is more important. Twelve percent (12%) are not sure. (To see survey question wording, click here.)
Republicans want to make more spending cuts in the current budget than Democrats do, but 36% of voters think it would be better to avoid a government shutdown by authorizing spending at a level most Democrats will agree to. Fifty-seven percent (57%) would rather have a shutdown until Democrats and Republicans can agree on deeper spending cuts.

Calling John Bonehead....Calling John Bonehead....Where are you?
Good to know that the fear of a voter backlash might not be as warranted as we think.
Now to beat the union media blitz in OH, WI, NH, etc...
Senator Kyl....you have a message...get a brain.
I’m not buying this. When the government shut down during the Clinton administration, even though it was Clinton’s fault. the voters still blamed the GOP. If the government shuts down we’re going to lose momentum at the least and quite likely congressional seats as a result.
It was Christmas time. Times have changed.
$61 BILLION amounts to 41 cents out of $100 DOLLARS.
Tell that to the public and the democrats lose their stupid ass argument.
>> Calling John Bonehead....Calling John Bonehead....Where are you?
Did you look on the Other Side of the Aisle? He’s prolly over there... on his knees.
“...partial shutdown...”
I have been calling for this approach for months now. Our congressional leaders do not seem to understand this is the way to do it.
You appropriate money for the military, social security, medicaid and border enforcement for homeland security. Probably the FBI. Pretty much what Obama asked for.
The rats pretty much have to vote for these. They at least have to pretend to be in favor of the military and anti-terrorism efforts.
SS and Medicaid are hot button issues that will kill the rest of the bill. So we appropriate them and save them for another day.
Then we let the rats cause a shutdown by voting against real cuts in other stuff
Coincidently, I believe I read recently that 31% of the people are getting checks of some form or another from the government. Social Security or work for the government.
With Boner up there unable and unwilling to lead on this, I don’t see much getting done till we have a new speaker running the show.
Offer a guarantee of $100Bn in cuts and I’ll bet the percentage would jump up another 10 points.
Does it make the people of New York fiscally conservative? Heck no.
Be careful what you wish for....Just saying!
Mike
Half the people in NY can’t speak English, so they probably think it says that’s how much money the government has to give htem.
It is about message. The voters by even larger margins support govt cuts and cutting spending. That is how things need to be cast as doing the responsible thing that any average hard working American has to do when they get into a a budget mess. They cut their spending. The GOP needs to take notes from Christie and don’t be afraid to make an adult argument in the face of spoiled children (govt unions).
Last time, the MSM carried the water of the Dems and hammered home the “It’s the Republicans fault” meme.
Things have changed. The internet, blogosphere, message boards, social networks etc...were not around then.
A gov’t shutdown or a busted budget replete with massive spending...I think the choice is pretty clear.
It's a long way to election. There's a lotta other stuff going down right now - and a lot more to come.
a shut down won't last that long and will soon be forgotten
So Stand up, Bone-head and other wuzzes.
b.s.
if the pubies do a newtered 2,
they’ll be done.
