AARP Tax Exemption Report at Center of Contentious Capitol Hill Hearing
Fox News ^ | April 1, 2011 | Doug McKelway

A Republican-authored report on alleged financial irregularities within AARP has met with deep resistance among Democratic lawmakers and AARP senior executives.

The report, entitled "Behind the Veil: The AARP America Doesn't Know," alleges that the AARP violated its tax exempt status by, in effect, selling health insurance policies and by actively lobbying for the massive health care law passed by Congress and signed by President Obama last year.

Both those activities, Republicans say, violate the spirit of 501c4 tax-exempt organizations, which are supposed to "promote the common good and social welfare of a community of people."

Confronted with the report during an oversight hearing Friday held by the House Ways and Means Committee, senior AARP managers recoiled at its accusations.

"We do not sell insurance," Barry Rand, chief executive officer of AARP told the committee. He described AARP's insurance related revenues as "royalties."

In such an arrangement, AARP receives a fee from private insurers in exchange for tweaking their policies, accepting an AARP "brand" and selling those polices to AARP members.

Sounds like a for profit deal. If it wasn't a member would realize the savings and AARP would operate on dues paid by members only.

Same as Unions another Democratic cash cow for elections.

Yeah; I greet the "royalties" scam to circumvent the intent of the Law the same as I greet the "no evidence exists" (when it obviously is destroyed or hidden) when a corruption or law-breaking occurs.

When a child is caught stealing a cookie, and eats it, no evidence exists.

“royalties”

Also known as ‘kinetic merchandising awards’, or k.m.a.’s

Yep, if it wasn’t for the insurance AARP offers I doubt they’d be in business. If they really want to help seniors they should give up their royalties so members could buy the insurance for less. Fat chance!

AARP is just another branch of the Democrat Party. Of course there is resistance to the report among Democrats. The party uses AARP to push their agenda with seniors.

Exactly. The people running AARP are leftist Dems, pure and simple.

I had AARP auto and home insurance for years. Got ticked off the way they were supporting ObamaCare so I went to Liberty Mutual and got much more coverage on autos and home an the bill annually was over $540 less than AARP company. When I called Hartford Insurance and cancelled my policies I asked if the difference between the tow companies covered the amount that AARP got from Hartford. My question was met with silence.

Probably 90% of it is abuse, would you like to give me you car, your boat, your john, etc, etc, they keep 99.9999% of the money tax payers get it in the rear, and the actual charity get a box of pennies.

I don’t see how anyone conservative could be part of AARP, as they have been contributing to the Brady Bunch forever. I mean, that’s a deal breaker right there, no need to look any further.
Any news of their revealed corruption, and the resulting cries from Democrats to protect this cash cow are only filling in the blanks of how thick the crap is.
