After ATF Blows Deadline, Issa Issues Subpoena for Project Gunrunner Papers

Published April 01, 2011

Republican Rep. Darrell Issa fired off a subpoena Friday to the Justice Department agency in the middle of a cross-border gun sales operation that has been blamed for a massive flow of arms to Mexican drug cartels and possibly the death of a U.S. border agent.

Issa, chairman of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, demanded the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives provide him documents related to "Project Gunrunner" after the agency failed to respond to questions by a Wednesday deadline.

"The unwillingness of this administration -- most specifically the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms -- to answer questions about this deadly serious matter is deeply troubling," Issa said in a written statement. "Allegations surrounding this program are serious and the ability of the Justice Department to conduct an impartial investigation is in question. Congressional oversight is necessary to get the truth about what is really happening."

Issa first requested the documents in a March 16 letter to Acting Director Kenneth Melson. Among the paperwork, he was seeking details on Project Gunrunner, its "Fast and Furious" component in Arizona and records related to the murder of Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry, who was killed in a December 2010 shootout.

Project Gunrunner, which got under way in late 2009, allowed straw buyers to illegally buy and export guns to Mexico. The stated goal, according to ATF, was to track the flow of guns in order to bring down the entire trafficking organization. Instead, records show it allowed more than 1,700 guns, including hundreds of AK-47s and high-powered, armor-piercing .50-caliber rifles to be trafficked to Mexico.

Cut the ATF funding. That will solve this problem.

This matter had better not go unpunished. The actions of not only BATFE but DOJ and DHS in this matter are very serious and people need to answer for their decisions.

The war against the Civil Right to RKBA has become violent and it’s not the pro-gun side that has shed the blood. This is something that needs to be thought upon greatly. The enemies of freedom have decided to take this matter to the next level.

They are now refusing to acknowledge the authority of Congress over them and have now become an official rogue agency. The similarities between what has happened here and what happened in Germany in the mid 1930’s is frightening.

Don’t be surprised if a “Krystal Nacht” happens here under the guise of counter terrorism or some other BS excuse.

We are dealing with people who are willing to kill to deprive Americans of their Civil Rights.

Last week, President Obama conceded that Fast and Furious may have been "a serious mistake," but he claimed, "I did not authorize it; Eric Holder, the attorney general, did not authorize it. He's been very clear that our policy is to catch gunrunners and put them into jail."

In the Obama Administration the buck always stops somewhere deep down in the bureaucracy.

"Cut the ATF funding. That will solve this problem."

I doubt that Tammy Faye Boehner is up for that course of action. Also, with the DOJ pretty much openly corrupt, I wonder what will happen if the subpoena's are simply ignored. How will they be enforced and what will be the consequences if the Administration and the Senate provide cover? Come on 2012.

Very well put BCR.
I would advise Issa not to hold his breath waiting for pertinent documents.
We are truly fighting rogue forces in our own government.
All I need to hear now is that the hag Jamie Gorelick has a hand somewhere in this.

“Cut the ATF funding. That will solve this problem.”?
Eliminate funding for the ATF. That will solve this problem.
Whole lot of scum deserve to be in jail or hung for past illegal deeds by this agency.

Seems to me that the fastest way to get at the truth in this matter would be for 2 Congressman to formally Charge Eric Holder and The head of the ATF with TREASON. We are in the Middle of a “ War on Drugs” Congress has officially declared a “War on Drugs” These quislings willfully and knowingly supplied “Arms to the Enemy” That my friends is the definition of TREASON. Hell level the Charge against the entire Administration, it would hold up in a regular Jury Trial but with the Senate I doubt it, So Charge them anyway and let them rot in GITMO as Enemy Combatants.

Nothing is going to happen in 2012 to fix this country anymore than it did in 1996.

One more national election will not break the republicrat power base. They all belong to their most powerful special interest group, which is really their god.

That false god is more government.

I agree they should both be in prison, but the idea of Congress declaring war as an exercise of the Commerce power just a little too creative. We’ve suffered quite enough from creative application of the enumerated powers already.

This thread has just added to the FreeRepublic "bang list" (firearms interest list) by adding the keyword "banglist".

Any time a firearms-related thread is created on FreeRepublic, please be sure to add the "banglist" keyword to it so that interested FReepers don't miss it. Just a suggestion.

I actually agree with you, but The Rat Party would not even think twice about such an act, so I say GO FOR IT. Whats good for the Goose.... Unfortunately The current members of the Ruling Class will do NOTHING when all is said and done.

It sounds attractive, but I see too much potential for unintended consequences. If that fits the definition of treason because we declared a “war on drugs”, then opposing redistribution of wealth becomes an act of treason in the “war on poverty”.

"The unwillingness of this administration -- most specifically the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms -- to answer questions about this deadly serious matter is deeply troubling,"

This isn't rocket science. The reason they're witholding papers, missing deadlines and not answering questions because is because they're hiding something.

Everything points to this going high up.

Another aspect that makes this seem to generate from higher up is the impossibly coordinated timing between this very distinct operation and the very distinct contrived MSM frenzy regarding the false flag of U.S. guns being smuggled to Mexico.

Coincidence my foot. There is NO WAY all of that came out of thin air at the exact time the ATF was running this "secret" operation - there absolutely had to have been colusion between sufficient government hirlings sufficiently connected to substantial media hay makers.

The lowly bureaucracy at the ATF could never have kick-started such a widespread propaganda storm on its own, even if it were so inclined.

They all got promotions and commendations for their murders at Waco TX and Ruby Ridge ID. I’m sure the same thing will happen here.

Nothing is going to happen in 2012 to fix this country anymore than it did in 1996.

Nothing happened in 1996 because the new media was too weak and MSM too willing to go to the wall for Clinton. They managed to lie enough to convince voters to reelect the president who should have been taken out of office. Now we have more new media, and more people know of the corruption of the MSM. The Tea Party is a good sign. History does not have to repeat itself. The key is information. The people cannot make good choices with bad information. More people are getting better information than they have for at least 80 years.
