WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama is getting ready to make one of Washington's worst kept secrets official: He wants a second term.

Democratic officials familiar with the plan say Obama will file 2012 campaign papers with the Federal Election Commission as early as this coming week.

It's a long-anticipated but formal step that will allow him to start raising money for the campaign, which will be based in Chicago.

The fundraising effort has begun. Obama raised $1.5 million at a Democratic fundraiser in New York City this past week and he'll headline events in the coming weeks in Chicago, Los Angeles and San Francisco.

Obama raised an eye-catching $750 million for his 2008 campaign.

The officials asked not to be identified in order to speak before the re-election papers are filed.

1844 - John Tyler was elected VP in 1840 to William Henry Harrison, when he died Tyler became President and ran a program favorable to the Democrats rather than the Whigs. The Whigs kicked him out of the party and in 1844 nominated Henry Clay. The Democrats didn’t trust Tyler either, so they nominated James Polk.

1848 - James Polk was not renominated by the Democratic Party, instead they nominated Lewis Cass, who lost to Zachary Taylor.

1852 - Millard Fillmore became the President upon the death of Zachary Taylor and when he signed the Compromise of 1850 became so unpopular that he was not renominated in 1852 by the Whigs. Instead they went with Winfield Scott who lost to the Democrat Franklin Pierce.

1856 - Franklin Pierce was not renominated by the Democrats in 1856, instead they chose Democratic party hack James Buchanan. He was such a non-entity that he was not renominated in 1860 on any of the parties that the Democrats had broken up into over slavery.

1868 - Andrew Johnson was not renominated by the Republicans, he was passed over for US Grant.

1880 - James Garfield won the nomination over the sitting President Rutherford B Hayes.

1884 - Chester A Arthur became President after Garfield was killed and James Blaine was nominated in his place.

1928 - Calvin Coolidge became President upon the death of Warren Harding and was replaced on the Republican ticket in 1928 by Herbert Hoover.

1952 - Harry Truman was replaced on the Democratic Ticket by Adlai Stevenson who lost to Ike.

1968 - Lyndon Johnson was replaced on the Democratic ticket of 1968 by Hubert Humphrey who lost to Richard Nixon.

The only reason LBJ didn’t run was because he was shellacked in the Vermont (?) primary by McCarthy.
Obama may need to experience the same rejection, considering all his life he’s been told how wonderful he is ...

He could stink up a debate and the MSM will call it perfume.

He sounds good. That's where it ends.

The content is vacuous, often incoherent. If not malevolent.

Just like they try to make Moochelle into a “fashion icon” It just doesn’t work. People can see what she looks like and what she wears and don’t need to be fed lies that she is so stylish.

“Abercrombie frankly acknowledged that presidential politics motivated his search for Obama birth records, implying that failure to resolve the questions that remain unanswered about the president’s birth and early life may damage his chance for re-election.”

Here’s a question every Democrat, Progressive, Liberal, Moderate, Independent, Republican, fool who voted for Barack Hussein Obama should be asked.

Will you renege in 2012?

Makes sense.
He wants four more years to ‘better his position’.

Remember the Clinton’s came to town straight out of Public Housing in Ark (remember didn’t even have a place to go on vacation that he could call his) with all his possessions in a small Uhaul.

8 short years later ‘they’ left with a Mansion in New York and it took all the United Van Lines and Global Van Lines trucks to move the swag.

Yes, BO wants another 4 and if we don’t watch it, someone will override that ‘pesky’ term limits thingy.....

RE: Unemployment at 10%

The latest figure is 8.8% if you can believe it. But if unemployment continues to go down, it will only be good for his campaign. Just saying...

For a guy that wants to be a really good one termer, it is hard to see how this logic requires a second term. If his definition of a good one term is taking America half way to Stalin, he may succeed.

Polk announced he wanted to serve only one term. As it was, he died soon after leaving office. Arthur was suffering from Bright's disease while in office and died less than two years after leaving the White House. Coolidge announced in 1927 that he did not choose to run for President in 1928--he died before Hoover's term was over. Truman and LBJ both took themselves out of the running. LBJ barely survived the end of the next Presidential term (by two days)--had he been in office the stresses of the job might have killed him sooner.

I believe LBJ won the New Hampshire primary--but his showing was surprisingly weak for an incumbent President against a longshot symbolic candidate (McCarthy) that he decided not to run for another term. Bobby Kennedy jumped into the race once it became clear that LBJ was vulnerable.
