Reporting from Sacramento -- As the battle over same-sex marriage makes its way through California's courts, another gay rights fight is smoldering in the Legislature.
Democratic lawmakers have revived a plan to require state schools to teach about the contributions of gay, lesbian and transgender Americans. They are reigniting a movement that halted five years ago when legislators approved such a requirement only to run into opposition from then-Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Now, with a Democrat in the governor's office, the lawmakers and gay rights activists are more hopeful that school curricula will be revised.

I think that about covers it.
Satan is alive and well in tahe West Coast!
Everyone should agree that AIDS is the most important contribution. Roughly ten years after homosexuality is delisted as a mental illness AIDS spreads all over the world, patient zero being a homosexual flight attendant.
“Now class, name the greatest contribution gays have made to society. Yes Johnny?”
“Detention for you, you intolerant little snot!”
/ I can just see it now.
4. Male airline stewards. I get uncomfortable when I am served by such. I mean who knows where those hands have been.
Ya, we wouldn’t want to provide students with a foundation to grow from....must make the 2 percenters feel important......
If homosexuality was still regarded as an illness and not mainstream ie. behavior still in the closet, would the world be healthier? Would AIDS be the problem it is and all the money spent on it, wouldn't some of it be going to cancer and heart disease research?
That does it. I’m going to lobby my Representative to press for legislation to teach children about the contributions of cat people, dog people, people who prefer light beer, and people who believe in the Easter Bunny but not in the Tooth Fairy.
Be sure to include Gaëtan Dugas—Patient Zero.
What’s the issue? It’s a total Democrat state. The Democrats can pass laws sanctioning - - and enthusiastically endorsing - - every kind of degenerate perversion under the sun, and who can stop them?
Hey, normal taxpayers - - get out of that place now.
Run, don’t walk. Do not be “the last white farmer in Zimbabwe”.
Must we know what people written about in school books did in the privacy of their bedrooms??
You don't understand. They have no intention of being private about their lifestyle. They fully intend to put it in your face, and in public, 24/7/365.
Didn't you know? The homos, the illegal aliens, and the muzzies BUILT America. What's wrong with you?
Yeah,THATS stuff to be proud of.
“How can 2% of the US population have such an effect on our culture?”
Never underestimate the raw power of the Hissy Fit.
CA deserves to rot.
We teach how many wives Henry VIII had and why.
My problem with this is a bit more practical. It's not clear who the historical gays are. Sure, you will know about Alan Turing or Philip II and Richard the Lionheart but it's largely a very hazy area. The "out" or documented homosexual has been the exception not the rule. I'd say that's true even today.
This risk here is an activist agenda going beyond the clearly documented and getting into the kind of speculation that pops up about Abe Lincoln or James Buchanan or Hitler.
I find it interesting that transgendered folks are being lumped in with gay and lesbian. Maybe the composite category should be named “sexually confused”?
