Boehner to introduce one-week stopgap to stave off shutdown (Pelosi had more of a pair)

Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) is set to introduce a bill Monday night to fund the military through September and fund government operations for one more week, Republican sources tell The Hill.

Boehner's move is intended to prevent a government shutdown that would start after Friday without another measure to fund the government.

House Appropriations Committee Chairman Hal Rogers (R-Ky.) said the GOP was trying to prevent a government shutdown "at all costs."

“We’re serious about trying to prevent a government shutdown. We’re also serious about cutting spending," he told reporters after a meeting of the GOP conference on Monday evening.

Boehner told GOP lawmakers attending a closed-door conference meeting that he needed “leverage” going into a meeting with President Obama and Senate Democratic leaders at the White House on Tuesday morning, a lawmaker told The Hill.

“He said he needs this (the as-of-yet-introduced bill) and the support of the conference going into that meeting at the White House, because he feels it gives him more leverage,” the source explained to The Hill.

Bohner knows the dems want to shut the gov’t down so they can twist the truth to blame Republicans...the real battle is the 2012 budget

Haven't you gotten the message that sense is forbidden here?

Face it -- you like big deficits. The thought that the budget might actually be cut scares you because you think maybe the voters won't like you anymore. You think it will be safer after the 2012 election? Two years from now will be a good time to do something? I bet you've been saying that for 20 years. We're always 2 years away from really doing something.

Isn’t it about time we supported these guys instead of always criticizing them when they don’t jump up and down and fix IT ALL at once. The reality is that we are still in the minority in the senate and they need incrementally to stir the pot. It took much longer than 3 months to get our debt to this point, it will take a whole lot longer to begin to draw it down.

Oh, Nooooooooooooooooo! It's much more fun to bash Boehner and insist he bring about instant budget recovery in less than 90 days with a majority of only one branch of government.

I'm looking forward to Paul Ryan's proposal tomorrow. As far as senate stalling, we ain't seen nothing yet.

For some reason many conservatives think it would be better to shut the Gov't down.

You do realize that the term "government shutdown" is a hyperbolic euphemism, right?

Why not include this little note:

*******************************EXCERPT**********************************

The measure would cut $12 billion in funding from current levels, The Hill confirmed.

**********************************

It is absolutely STUPID to shutdown the Government over these CR's......

Now lets battle over the big item when Ryan lays that out!

The Democrats want a SHUTDOWN on the small stuff!!!

was totally wrong.

Since QE2 announcement, the Fed has purchased well over 70% of all Treasuries.

When the debt ceiling is raised and QE3 annoucned, it is expected the Fed will be the purcahser of over 80% of all Treasuries.

Meanwhile China is not increasing Treasury holdings, Japan is liquidating Treasuries to pay for their own crisis, the UK is in worse shape than the US, and the Cayman Islands holding companies are finding safer havens with higher returns in other markets.

SO the question is, why raise the debt ceiling when there are no buy side participants in the debt market?

As soon as everyone not at the table realises no one else is sitting at the poker table either, interest rates are going to soar.

The thought that the budget might actually be cut scares you

The budget IS being cut. Perhaps not as much as you would like but each CR shows a cut. To cut what was supposed to be a DEM budget (which they didn't pass last year because they wanted this current Kabuki) is a good step forward.

Two years from now will be a good time to do something?

No. The 2012 budget is being announced TOMORROW by the GOP complete with $4 trillion in CUTS. Many hearings lie ahead and the reason the Dems are limping ahead with demands for these CR's is that they don't want hearings to start on the 2012 budget.

wow. there are clearly people here who don’t understand how the world works.

what this all means is the either boehner is a fool (which would be preferable to the other alternative) or boehner is *afraid.*

to quote a brilliant mind: “fear is the mind killer.”

the sharks all know this and obama and the dems are nothing if not sharks. now the smell blood. they will never give in. the main chance has been lost.

This isn’t news. Boehner announced weeks ago that all he would do as Speaker is speak, smoke, and weep. He’s worse than useless.

I wonder if I dare to think that Boehner is finally about to take charge?

*Funding the military through September* plus a stop gap bill for one more week: then go for the gold?

Our House Bill with the riders or shut your damn government down?

Pelosi had... the Senate and President backing her. And the media.

Boehner only has the voters.

I expect more from him but I’m pleased with what he’s done so far.

Update on Capitol Hill From FNC's Chad Pergram:

This new CR would conceivably kick in at 12:00:01 am Saturday if adopted. However, Team Boehner repeatedly calls this a backup...and suggests they will only "break glass" on this if they have to.

However, senior appropriators tell me that they are writing this as though it is going to the floor...although there is no plan to go to Rules or the floor just yet (remember....they need "three days" in the House..to allow bills to lay over before they can consider them).
