Leak at Fukushima appears to be lessening
NHK World ^ | April 5, 2011 | Staff

The operator of the crisis-hit Fukushima nuclear plant has injected a hardening agent beneath a leaking concrete pit in a bid to stem the flow of highly radioactive water into the sea.

The firm says the leakage seems to be decreasing, following the infusion of the hardening agent.

...Tokyo Electric Power Company started infusing liquid glass into gravel below the pit near the Number 2 reactor at 3 PM on Tuesday.

TEPCO spotted a crack in the pit 3 days ago while trying to find the source of the leakage of contaminated water into the Pacific Ocean.

...TEPCO is planning to board up the breached sections of an offshore dike to prevent the tainted water from spreading further into the sea.

It is also considering building underwater barriers at 3 locations, including one near a water intake for the Number 2 reactor.

Maybe the hardest working people on earth are accomplishing something here in a very difficult situation. Maybe some credit is due...??

That is good news. However, right now they are intentionally releasing radioactive water from # 5 and #6 because they fear losing control of those two reactors next. We do have two more reactors that have yet to explode. And #5 experienced significantly more ground motion then it was rated for. My guess was the leak at #2 was to cover the intentional release at #5 and #6. Paradoxically, It is also how these guys do business.

As I understand it, and I am nowhere near an expert, the release of the water is how they are avoiding meltdown. Also, ground motion was not what disturbed the reactors, but it was the overwhelming tsunami. Again, this is according to many reports.

The reason they shutdown the reactors automatically when a certain ground motion has been reached, is so they can later expect for damage and certify the plant was not damaged. They have not been able to properly inspect and certify the plants due to the followup tsunami. So we do not know what damage the earthquake has caused.

And yes, if they did not release this water, it would be much worse for air breathers. They have decided to kill the fishes and save the humans. Tough choice if you ask me.

Not really. Man has dominion over the animals.

expect should be inspect.

And please do not ask me who that image represents. Do not want them after me. You will have to figure that out on your own.

Lessening - is that a word?
How about decreasing.

Good news.

I have not paid too much attention to this event since I had to basically tell a few IDIOTIC FReepers that the sky was not falling an we are not going to all die (from radiation).

I like to believe we FReepers are tough, intelligent and rational beings, but this has really brought the wussies out of the bureau (or wherever the wussies hide). Thanks for the post.

The word out now is that it has stopped as per Tepco.

The radioactive water is coming from the spent fuel pools. Those are outside the concrete containment building which houses the reactor.

Source???

They are using feed and bleed on the reactors and spent fuel storage.

This is an interesting post from a nuclear engineer.

So are they incompetent or were the numbers right and they are backtracking because of what those numbers would mean.

Radioactive ground water is filling up the lower sections of the buildings. They have pumped it into the storage tanks they are now bleeding. The radioactive water forces them to abandon the buildings and will damage equipment. Different situation then what initially caused the loss of control in 1,2,3 and 4. At any rate, cracks reported in the #5 building.
