How I lost faith in multiculturalism

IN 1993, my family and I moved into Belmore in southwest Sydney. It is the next suburb to Lakemba. When I first moved there I loved it.

We bought a house just behind Belmore Sports Ground, in those days the home of my beloved Bulldogs rugby league team. Transport was great, 20 minutes to the city in the train, 20 minutes to the airport.

On the other side of Belmore, away from Lakemba, there were lots of Chinese, plenty of Koreans, growing numbers of Indians, and on the Lakemba side lots of Lebanese and other Arabs.

That was an attraction, too. I like Middle Eastern food. I like Middle Eastern people. The suburb still had the remnants of its once big Greek community and a commanding Greek Orthodox church.

But in the nearly 15 years we lived there the suburb changed, and much for the worse.

Three dynamics interacted in a noxious fashion: the growth of a macho, misogynist culture among young men that often found expression in extremely violent crime; a pervasive atmosphere of anti-social behaviour in the streets; and the simultaneous growth of Islamist extremism and jihadi culture.

Lakemba, by the way, is a suburb of Sydney - 30% Moslem and the site of one of Australia's largest mosques - the reason he mentions it at the start of the article.

Anyone whoever had any faith in multiculturalism was a fool. Multiculturalism has never worked anywhere in human history. It's been the major reason for most of the strife that has befallen mankind. I cannot believe any person could have put any faith into it. The only people who believe in it are fools and the young. Many young people have been indoctrinated into this foolishness in the secondary school system.

I knew multiculturalism was a bad thing the first I heard of people taking it seriously.

Has it really changed that much in 15 years, or has it always been like that, more or less, and it took that long for a committed multiculturalist to connect cause and effect?

Second, the problems that Bowen is talking about are problems with Muslim immigrants, not with immigrants generally.

I live in the WDC area. This is prime multiculturalism area. What a mess on many levels. Among those who are wealthy, most are civilized. Problems start occurring where they are not in the educated wealthy set. Most aren’t.

Countries should have banned immigration of Muslims. Islam has always been a political conquest masked as a religion. They will never be assimilated and will always be violent in trying to subjugate the societies they invade.
