NAACP objects to MLK Drive location for Civil War marker
Atlanta Journal ^ | 4/7/11 | Megan Matteucci

To mark the 150th anniversary of the Civil War, the street named after civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. will soon bear a marker commemorating the burning of Atlanta.

The Georgia Historical Society will install the historical marker Monday in front of the Georgia Railroad Freight Depot on Martin Luther King Jr. Drive.

The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People said it doesn’t mind remembering history, but it would have preferred a different location.

Someone help me out - are they objecting to the war that freed the slaves? This is bizarro world.

If democrats are objecting to that, it’s perfectly understandle, seeing as how the rats are trying to re-institute slavery.

I’m going back to bed. Wake me up when we land back on Earth.

“It seems to be honoring something that reminds us of some tragic occurrences that happened to our people at the time. The whole war itself centered around the slave issue,” said R.L. White, president of the NAACP’s Atlanta branch. “We accept that it’s history but would like to see it done somewhere else than the heart of the civil rights historic district. It’s kind of tragic that the state is choosing that location.”
It literally makes no sense for the NAACP to object to an historical marker put in the history district of Atlanta. Why in the world is it “tragic” for the state of Georgia to choose that location? My only thought is that the NAACP, besides being inveterate complainers, feel that MLK Drive should not be overshadowed in any way by another historical reference. Honestly, I was surprised there was not already a commemoration of the burning of Atlanta.

Yeah, 660,000 dead soldiers is still not enough for these clowns. I've been to Gettysburg a number of times and still cannot find the NAACP or any other "civil rights" organization's monument of thanks to these soldiers. Incredible . . . if there is one, let me know.

Every thoroughfare named after MLK I’ve ever encountered has been an artery of crime running through the city. Want drugs, a prostitute, or just to be shot? Check out MLK Jr. Drive.

I wonder if this particular MLK Jr. Drive is anything like the one that we have here in St. Paul.

You don’t go there unarmed, day or night.

The irony of using MLK as a street name, is that it tells visitors exactly where to avoid driving.

Here in Cleveland, because some of the great hospitals are at the inner end of our MLK Drive, anyone going down that road, particularly women, are told to keep all purses off the seats or in view of anyone outside of the car. They're also told to keep a distance in front of and behind their cars at traffic stops so they can take off if someone tries to box them in.

We've come a long way in race relations!

What is the NAACP complaining about? Are they not aware that the fall of Atlanta was a Confederate defeat and a Union victory?

Yes it is apparently holy ground considering MLK’s church, home and crypt are nearby. Considering the neighborhood you would think they would find other things to bitch about.

I think they’re objecting to having whitey do anything in their black separatist district.

“Yes it is apparently holy ground”
I am not familiar with Atlanta, having never visited, but if all of this is in bad neighborhood well then they should be thrilled for the reference to a key part of the Civil War. It has been 146 years since the end of the Civil War and 47 years since the passage of the Civil Rights Act. A lot of time has elapsed for blacks to acclimate themselves to their increasing opportunities and to the acceptance that once upon a time, they were slaves in America. At this point in their history, the stories of slaves should be an exciting piece to their collective puzzle and welcomed not only their educational value but their sentimental appeal. Organizations like the NAACP and the likes of Al Sharpton et al have done more to perpetuate the victimization of black Americans than the legacy of antebellum times has ever done.

You are so right!! I live on Long Island and every neighborhood that has a MLK street, avenue, blvd. or drive in it is a bad neighborhood. And that is on Long Island which for the most part is all suburban. I would not venture, ever, on MLK Blvd. in NYC. This is saying something profound.

I had to check to see where exactly this is located in relation to anything at all that could be deemed offensive to the memory of MLK. These crackpots are delusional.

It is next to Underground Atlanta, the Capital and Georgia State University ie the center of downtown. Roughly a mile across an interstate from the King Center. These idiots just don’t like it because it is on MLK Drive.

Spot on! I’m sure MLK is proud his name has been attached to every dope and ‘ho district in the world.

They would be more respectful of his legacy in getting his name removed and re-attached to something with some urban credibility. That is, of course, if they see him as someone worthy of respect rather than someone on whose coat-tails they can cruise for the duration.
