Goose Has No Mate, Deer May Be Protecting Nest

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- An unusual springtime friendship between a deer and a nesting goose appears to have blossomed inside a cemetery in Buffalo, N.Y. For the past week or so, the deer has been standing near an urn where the goose has taken up residence, positioning itself between the urn and any passing car or foot traffic.

Craig Cygan noticed the unlikely pair during his regular patrols with his goose-chasing border collies. He says there is no mate around the goose and he believes the deer has taken over the job of protecting the nest.

Cornell University wildlife expert Paul Curtis says deer and geese usually don't pay any attention to each other.

Forest Lawn Cemetery officials are trying to arrange for a webcam so the curious can check in on the nest.

I hope this doesn't turn out to be one of those "Aww" stories where later you find out that one of the unlikely animal friends ended up eating the other.

Nonsense. The deer is there to eat the chicks when they hatch.

Years ago I saw a young deer and a coon come nose to nose and the coon patting the muzzle of the deer with its front paws.

I’ve seen what swans do to baby geese. It ain’t pretty.

However I did discover where the term “torn limb from limb” came from.

If that goose ends up eating that deer, that would make this story so horrifically awesome!

I have a lot of family buried at Forest Lawn. They keep more interesting company than I do, apparently.

Now that it’s advertised, I’m sure some coward will shoot both.

We have a zoo here, and a few years back some bastards sneaked in one night and shot some of the deer and antelope.
I don’t think they were ever caught...................

My own personal experience with such events in nature was a dog who nursed some newborn kittens (until they were “weened”) that she - the dog - rescued after the kittens’ mother was run over by a car.

She raised them as if they were her own pups, and they responded to her as though she was their natural mother.

I had a small flock of ducks. Some creep came on our property one Halloween and cut their bills off with tin snips. They all died.

Makes one think that animals might be a lot more intelligent than we know, and that God does provide.
