Coburn, Toomey: Drop the Policy Riders

April 8, 2011 1:03 P.M. By Daniel Foster

Here’s Senator Toomey:

“I’d like to defund Planned Parenthood, but I understand that Republicans don’t have complete control of the elected government,” Toomey said on MSNBC. “I think what we should do is cut spending as much as we can, get the policy changes that we can, but move on, because there are other, bigger battles that we are fighting.”

And here’s Senator Coburn:

COBURN: The one thing I’ve learned in my years here is there’s one reason to talk about something, if you want to talk about it, to create a political climate. There’s another, the common sense way is what can I really get done? What’s the realities of the situation? And my recommendation to my friends in the House is, you know, it’s highly unlikely that many riders are going to get passed with a Democrat president and a Democrat Senate, so why don’t you take the spending and let’s get on to the budget.

I think the senators are right that it would be folly to shut down the government for policy riders that will never become law with a Democratic Senate and White House. But it’s wise for House Republicans to draw the game of chicken out as long as they reasonably can. If the Democrats think they are willing to shut down the government over Planned Parenthood funding (as Mike Pence has said he is), then they are likely to at least offer concessions.

FWIW this is what the House has to deal with. I personally think they're doing the best they can under the circumstances.

Should the Republican cave in here and ink this deal that means funding to Planned Parenthood, then

EFF THEM!!

They will never have any credibility with future budget deals. And even worse - they will make it even easier for Obammie to win re-election in '12.

Hey Toomey - this is the closest the GOP House will ever have a "Filibuster" - cave on this little couple a billion exercise and the debt ceiling and the 2012 budgets are gone forever. LEARN HOW TO NEGOTIATE before waltzing into Congress.

First of all quitting because you know you can’t win? So, If the Sooners KNOW they won’t beat the Longhorns I assume Mr. Coburn will advise them to stay home.

Second, I have a feeling BooHoo Boner does not have the votes.

This is the bottom line. If they cave on this, THROW THE BUMS OUT!

You don’t win by caving. That’s been the Republicans’ problem for the past 60 or 70 years.

And nothing could be more egregious than taking huge sums of tax money and using it to fund a greedy organization that uses it to corrupt school children and kill babies.

It does mean funding for Planned Parenthood, now .....but the Republicans know this as well. Remember, the Senate is Dem controlled and the golfer (valarie jarret, the first women president) has said it will be vetoed. We have done as much as we can do this round....IMHO.

It makes them look like heroes to their baby-killing base. Didn’t you hear? Poor Mr. Reid’s daughter and granddaughter won’t be able to get their pap smears and mammograms done at Planned Parenthood anymore (as if they ever had). Can’t say that Harry takes very good care of his family if PP is their usual medical services provider.

That may be true. But in a bad way. If we get our tails kicked here - correction - if we surrender and waive the white flag here - then any future budget negotiations will go a whole lot smoother.

For the Democrats.

I called Reid’s office this afternoon about that very thing, and gave them a piece of my mind. Shameful, just shameful on his part.

You expect them to get EVERYTHING they want with only 1/3 of the power? Strange.

If they are getting ANY cuts in what was supposed to be a Dem budget, more power to them.

2012 budget hearings are ahead. Much bigger battles and cuts lie ahead. Get this one done.

Planned Parenthood gave 1 million dollars to Democrats last election cycle. Giving them tax money is nuts. When Chuckie Schumer stops calling women airline stewardess bit**es I will believe he understands what respect for women really means. He is an old dirt bag.

You’re deluding yourself if you think it will go any better in the “bigger budget battle” than it did in the run-up to it.

Once the (R)s establish themselves as willing to compromise, that’s what will be demanded from here on out.

It will go better because for 2012 we get weeks and weeks of hearings which will expose the issues to the public. We didn't get that for 2011 because the Dems did not pass a budget; they feared holding hearings because they knew they would look bad against the Repub and an election was coming up.

Once the (R)s establish themselves as willing to compromise, that’s what will be demanded from here on out

I'm not a purist who believes that we will get every single item we want; that being said...I think we are going to get MAJOR cuts in the 2012 budget for reasons described above.

It's all about who flinches first. The House hasn't caved yet so that's a good sign.

ROFL! You’re kidding, right? WHO is going to bring the unvarnished truth to the unwashed masses, pray tell? ABCCBSSNBCNNMSNBC? That’s rich.

>> I think we are going to get MAJOR cuts in the 2012 budget for reasons described above.

And — again — I think you’re delusional. A (R) party that can’t make the little gains will NOT make the big ones, either. They are establishing themselves as not serious, not persistent, and not confident.

I see the NY Slimes is joining in the misrepresentation.

Conservatives Urge Boehner to Cut a Budget Deal and Move On

There is a difference between advocating a 'deal' so you're not painted the losers by the media and saying cut a deal and move on because we've got bigger fish to fry.

Problem is if the Dems are fighting us this hard over $30B imagine what they'll do when we're talking trillions of $ and turning medicare into a voucher system, block granting medicaid to the states, etc. It's only going to get worse. The House and Senate GOP need to show Obama & Reid the gun they brought to the fight. Knives won't get it done.

This is the only reason I would be willing to accept offering the bill without any policy riders, it will expose the Dems as unwilling to fund the troops for the rest of the year, if the rest of government is not funded also. The current bill before the house funds DOD for through Sept. and the rest of government for one week.
