Toyota to Halt Output in N. America after Japan Quake

New York, April 8 (Jiji Press)--Toyota Motor Corp. <7203> said Friday it will suspend vehicle production at 13 of its 14 North American plants due to disruptions in Japanese-made parts and component supplies caused by the March 11 massive earthquake and tsunami.

The 13 plants will stop operations for four to five days in the April 15-25 period, the top Japanese automaker said. Production plans for April 26 and beyond have not been decided yet.

Probably a smart move for the nation of Japan. Not so good for us. I suppose Obama will blame the Tea Party.

It is reported in the Cincinnati Enquirer this morning that the most popular purchased vehicle in the area is the Ford F-150 truck. For automobiles, the Toyota Camry ranks first and the Toyoda Corolla ranks second.

Having spent a number of years in heavy industry, I recall that we went out of our way to arrange for backup suppliers of every item possibly needed in case one had an extended strike, fire or any disruption of flow. And with the advent of just in time inventory it became even more important. If Toyota is ceasing USA manufacturing it must be cause of shortsightedness on the part of Japanese leadership.

It must be the hari-kari mentality. But in the meanwhile American workers suffer.

Bring the factories here. Pronto. Even if the Japanese factories were not damaged, they are rationing power, and the government is giving preference to residential power consumers over factories. We have power, so pack those factories up and move them here.

Freudian slip of Soetiro’s tongue when he mentioned “trade ins”, perhaps?

Get those Volt sales up, right?

It is going to be a while for the Japanese to recover from that particular quake,it will affect any country doing business with them.

Toyota violates their own rules about long supply lines by purchasing parts in Japan.
