Boston Mayor Thomas Menino KOs Soda, OKs Alcohol

Published April 10, 2011 | FoxNews.com

Boston Mayor Thomas Menino has banned soda, sports drinks and sweetened ice teas from city property, according to a recent government press release.

In an attempt to reduce the city’s rising obesity rates, Menino has banned all sugary drinks from city vending machines, cafeterias and concession stands, just one day after reaching an agreement with the Boston Red Sox that allows the team to sell mixed drinks at its ballpark.

“I want to create a civic environment that makes the healthier choice the easier choice in people’s lives, whether it’s schools, work sites, or other places in the community," said Menino in the press release issued last week about the soda ban.

The tax on soda doesn’t outweigh the costs of forced “free” government health care needed apparently.

Mayor Menino has a constitutional right to be STUPID. He has NO right to force his stupidity on the citizens of Boston.

Which is it, from city property (meaning employees or citizens with business could not bring their own) or from sale on city properties? Or both?

Before Memnino the seat belt law was turned down because it was too Nanny State-like.

That was one of the first things he changed and since has gone Nanny all the way.

His current ban is totally selfish.

I suppose this why I roll my eyes and laugh nowadays when people expound upon how wonderful America still is.

And what do you accomplish when you do that, other than to lower morale among your fellow Americans and make the youngest among them feel frightened and insecure?

Tell me, what do you accomplish?

You don't even make yourself feel better, for crying out loud!

And don't wonder when you stop getting invitations to barbeques. Don't wonder if you have the sneaking suspicion that some folks are rolling their eyes and laughing at you behind your back.

Acknowledging the ridiculous and dangerous proclivities of liberalism and that there's a problem to be fixed is one thing.

Saying that the nation we love is not still wonderful in many ways, so many that it's well-worth fighting for, makes you a killer of hope and a sapper of strength and courage.

Just sayin'.

Looks like he's banned all sugary goodies from CITY PROPERTY, period.

His next step will be to lure and hire airport patter-downers from Homeland Security to frisk all city employees and search their lunch bags eacj morning as they enter the front doors of their office buildings.

Oh I don’t know sticking my head in the sand really doesn’t appeal to me. The thought of hanging out with people happier to wear blinders and act like sheep isn’t particularly alluring either, even though they may make a mean beef brisket.

Actually I take that back. I’d be willing to lie to myself and others for a REALLY GOOD beef brisket.

This sounds like a joke but he is considering legislation regulating by law, how people in the city can wipe their butts.

No more than one TP ration, with no more than 4 squares.

Apparently, an attendant will ‘log you in’ and give you your ration of TP. You will be searched going in and comming out to ensure there is no hording.

Personal TP is banned from all city property and you are allowed to ‘go’ a maximum of three times in a day.

Also, it is illegal to wipe from behind. You must go in from the front because a commission found that this way is more ‘efficient’.

Anyone caught in possession of, or using ‘unauthorized’ TP will be prosecuted.

The Mayor has said that it is his duty as a public official to ensure people are wiping their butts correctly and in the most efficient way possible.

Also, he again insisted that he has no plans for random anus cleanliness checks at this time.

You failed to answer my question: What do you accomplish?

You actually think that rejecting your notion that the U.S. is no longer wonderful is the same as sticking one's head in the sand?

Get some priorities and take off your cloud-colored glasses. They are as DANGEROUS and deceptive as rose-colored glasses.

Like the sheep you criticize, you ALSO are a sheep of a different kind, wearing blinders of a different kind. You bury your OWN head in the sand; you pretend nothing can be done, as opposed to those you accuse of thinking nothing needs to be done. You are, in essence, the same kind of critter.

What about the sugar people put in their coffee? They going to ban that as well?

Are they going to check everyone who brown bags their lunch for sugary drinks? They going to inspect every thermos in lunchboxes? All I see here is people simply sneaking soda and other stuff in on their own in anyway they can get it in. People are not going to abide by this, no way.

But you know, the people of Boston voted for this idiot, so let them wallow in their decision to put this man in office.

Guess he never heard of a "beer gut"...or he's a drunk who only drinks boilermakers, so won't be affected by the ban.

As far as I'm concerned, none of it should be 'socially' taxed, banned, or regulated to coerce behavior or "health". Some of us like some potatoes with our meat...though all potatoes and no meat is pretty repulsive. ;-)

Let the people choose what enters their mouth, 'for that defileth not a man; it is what he spews from his lips that defileth him'.

Actually, that is one of the more common factors in female genitourinary infections. It often brings fecal bacteria into contact with moist mucosa 'up front'.

What cafeteria, concession stand or vending machine doesn't offer "diet" alternatives or water? Those choices were already as easy to make as the "sugary" ones.

Banning alcohol would deprive the pols of their favorite soda. It’s no accident there’s been a war on tobacco, on sugar, on fat, but never on alcohol.

And, of course, the oceans of alcohol flowing through the pols’s veins helps to explain the politics.

Wonder how long until a type 1 diabetic’s family sues the city for making their relative have a sroke or die waiting for an ambulance? Just because we carry stuff with us does not mean we are always ok.Sometimes if it is low enough it may take more than what we can carry to bring us back to a level that brings us out of danger of dying.Making it so that substance is hard to get is a very bad idea and forcing someone to wait 30 minutes or longer for an ambulance can cause major damage and/or death.

You see this were you are wrong. I don't need to feel compelled to accomplish anything. My own ambivalent observations allow me to stay above the fray and out of the zone of influence that so many other people are affected by.

Its better to stay impartial and act when its prudent. I believe that the right opportunity will come along and it is at that time my actions will have significant influence. Its much better than flailing around and trying to swat at everything.
