Progressives ponder why tea party is kicking their butts

By the time I finished reading this lengthy, plaintive missive by Richard Esko at the Huffington Post, I will confess that I’d actually begun feeling sorry for him. Observing the conclusion of the recent budget battles and viewing them as a disastrous loss for the progressive movement, Mr. Esko casts about for an answer to what seems to be the question of the day: How does the evil Tea Party keep kicking our butts when our ideas are so wildly popular and clearly superior? And he thinks he’s found some answers.

Once again the unpopular views of a minority have been imposed on the majority. Others will rant and rave about the Democratic leadership, and in fact that process has already begun. But progressives in this country should be asking themselves a serious question: Why does the Tea Party seem to be so much more effective than the left as a movement?

It’s a complicated question that deserves in-depth discussion, but some of the things that may be impeding progressives include excessive party loyalty, the desire for a charismatic leader (the “XFK phenomenon”), and the urge to prematurely celebrate accomplishments that are flawed and incomplete.

My head was beginning to spin just reading that last portion, but trust me… you’ll want to push on and read the rest. The first conclusion Richard reaches is one of the usual suspects. It’s all about the Benjamins.

Why did Tea Partiers win such a major victory? Money, for starters.

I watched a Glenn Beck show, maybe one last week, where one of his guests made the point that the progressives don’t have any understanding of what they are aiding and abetting in their unholy alliance with activist islam. He said they don’t understand the religious mind, and don’t know to fear them.

Same here; the left doesn’t understand righteous causes, so they are unable to understand why the Tea Party has had the impact it has. Their projection: money, because that is one of the things that drives them.

The pendulum has been swinging their way for 60 years.

It has reached its apex.

The future for them is filled with nothing but heartbreak and despair.

Leftists consider anything less than imprisonment and execution of conservatives to be losing the battle.

"Their projection: money, because that is one of the things that drives them."

The underlying "projection" is "greed and envy".

"...Envy is such an important but generally ignored concept, probably because people don't want to consider the sinister ways it operates in their own lives. But it is a key that unlocks many mysteries, particularly in politics. So strong and pervasive is envy, that you cannot have a political system that doesn't accommodate or find some way to manage envy. You might say that one party will generally represent the envied, the other the envious. Guess which ones.

"... envy is ubiquitous in primitive groups, and in fact, is the very thing that keeps them primitive and undeveloped.

"In order to advance into capitalism, human beings had to get past the “envy barrier” and tolerate the idea that some people will have more than others.

"In primitive groups, envy is so pervasive that no one is allowed to have more than anyone else--they are trapped in a "zero sum" theory of economics, just as are many liberals today.

"To naive leftists, a primitive culture may look like an egalitarian paradise, but it is actually a paranoid and envious hell, with everyone fearful of the “evil eye” of his envious neighbor should he acquire more than him. For this reason, primitive groups mindlessly destroy surpluses or engage in sacrifices to their “envious” gods.

"Since envy is ubiquitous, we must have a cultural means of expressing and channeling it. This is how I regard the left on a psychological level, as the institutional means through which envy may express itself. For example, this is the role of trial lawyers, who are naturally the greatest contributors to the Democratic party. Most--obviously not all--trial lawyers are free-floating agents of envy, on the prowl for deep pockets that they might empty on behalf of their envious client. The socialist countries of Western Europe are driven by the attempt to placate envy, which only ends up creating more of it. Once you inculcate a sense of entitlement in your people, you have opened the floodgates of envy.

"If you have an “ear” for envy, you will detect it everywhere in the liberal world. In psychoanalytic parlance, it is also called “spoiling,” or devaluing. Again, because the envious person cannot tolerate the good, he attacks the good and makes it bad.

"More generally, the international left does not attack the United States because they hate us. Rather, they hate the United States because they envy us. Precisely because they cannot tolerate our unparalleled goodness and success, they attack it and turn America into a uniquely bad, greedy and envious object.

"It is pure projection. In engaging in this projection of their own greed and envy, they damage what is good and conflate good and evil, but at least it helps to temporarily diminish the pain of their own envy. They do the same thing with Israel. But to use one of Freud's most famous phrases, when it comes to the projection of envy and greed, "the one who smelt it, dealt it."

"....if we could somehow eliminate envy from the human genome, there would be almost no reason for the left to exist. They would instantly lose that which animates them, for example, envy masquerading as justice or economic theory. In order to be happy, we must all keep our envy in check, because envy is the opposite of gratitude. Envy does not appreciate what one has, only what one doesn't have. And our capacity to imagine what we do not have--and that someone else is enjoying it--is literally infinite, as is envy. .." - Robert Godwin, Ph.D (Clinical psychologist) Read complete commentary HERE

Kicking their butts? When Boehner and the rest of the RINO limp-wrists in the house bend over for the left yet again?? Sorry...but I don’t get it.

Damn, I love how you phrased that. There's a whole book in there.

"Progressives' (a.k.a. liberals) have been getting their way for most of the past century and now, with Obama, into this one. Their destructive policies and programs, based on fallacies and Utopian dreams, are bearing the inevitable bitter fruit such dopey schemes were always destined to bring those who tried them. The normally politically apathetic American people, seeing their comfortable, secure lives threatened and tired of being insulted by liberal fools who sneer at traditional American values such as patriotism, religious conviction and marriage and seeing the nation's economy heading for a meltdown as Obama and the Democrats spend recklessly, revolted....peacefully but firmly and in large numbers. They protested (formerly the province of leftists - only) and did so with a degree of civility never seen when leftists protest. More important, they coalesced into what was called the 'TEA party' (Taxed Enough Already) and, last November, were a driving force in electing dozens of new, mostly conservative Representatives, governors and senators.

The Democrats lost their huge majority in the House and just barely hung onto a majority in the senate. President Obama's election was endlessly trumpeted as 'historic', as if that were the only reason to elect him. Obama, who had an approval rating that was around 70% immediately following his election is now in the mid-40's, at best. He is no longer considered as 'brilliant' (except by his sycophants in the leftmedia). Despite Democrat party flunkies writing and uttering constant expressions of sublime confidence, Obama's re-election is no longer assured. In fact, it is far less than assured. Naturally, liberals are floundering around for an answer. They'll never find it. They don't understand the average American but they sure do underestimate him. That will be their downfall: arrogance that breeds over-confidence and a lack of respect for the taxpayer-voter. Obama and his party are headed for a very long fall in the next election - and they deserve it.

Liberals don’t make any sense. Let capitalism run and help is always there. Let socialism run and it must be fought for. Liberals loose quite a few points from the big picture game of life long before stepping in the arena.

Even if leftists get everything they want, it doesn’t matter because it would cause a debt crisis and thus game over for them.

It was a problem for the Left re Bush. They spent so much time portraying him to the public as a complete incompetent fool and then - before the eyes of the world - they lost again and again to this so called ‘dunce’. They couldn’t defeat the ‘dunce’ and that didn’t make them look good or feel good. Hence the rage that persists to this day.
They did it again with the Tea Party.

Here’s what it really boils down to: the Tea Party has a strong, simple and honest message that resonates with the American public: the Government spends to much, and finances too much of that spending through borrowing. It’s killing our country and needs to stop. Now.

Progressives don’t have an honest message. They talk in platitudes about things like change and hope ... but wait until AFTER they win elections on those things to let the public knows what it really means. Because if they were to tell the public BEFORE elections, they’d never win. And then they wonder why they get their a**es kicked the next time around.

A corollary to that is that the public, by and large is always going to want STUFF. Until they know how much its going to cost them. Hey, bacon-wrapped filet mignon three times a week? Great - bring it on! What, it’s going to cost me $80? No way! Progressives have a proven track record of overpromising stuff, but then waiting until after elections (because they’d never win elections beforehand ...) to tell people that they’ll actually have to PAY for it (in some way or another).
