Catalan (Spanish 'state') independence boost after Barcelona vote

Campaigners for Catalan independence claim they have made significant advances after one in five people in the region's capital city, Barcelona, backed a call for a separate state in Sunday's unofficial referendum.

Although the vote was organised by volunteers and had no legal standing, organisers said it had pushed the issue of independence further into mainstream political debate in this wealthy and populous north-eastern Spanish region.

I wonder what more independence do they want? They already control a lot of their own. Btw, to those who hope for conservatism, Catalonia is the most liberal of all Spanish states and imho very irreligious.

This may be bad news for France in case southern france (Catalunya) wants to join

Don’t you mean Provence?

You’re right about the leftists in Catalonia, though. Calling them ‘liberal’ doesn’t do them justice. There are probably more real communists per capita in Catalonia than anywhere outside of Berkeley.

Let me get this straight.

20% of people in some non-binding activist vote supported independency and this is good news for Catalonia independence activists?

I wonder what the bad news would have been.

Anyway, I’m enjoying the problems in Old Europe.

Belgium hasn’t had a government for a year. (Lazy welfare suckers in French-speaking region want to be supported be the hard-working people in Flemish area). They already have some unofficial road blocks (by local militia) in few areas.
Country may soon be split into two.

Spain may be split too. Italy’s wealthy North and poor South do not get along. In the Netherlands and France, there are already official muslim-run areas where non-muslims cannot enter (at least without army support).
