Sure, but that has nothing to do with the political significance of the birther problem, for now or the future.

Your poem should belong in the Poetry Hall of Fame (if there is one). The Donald is not only persistent, but in noticing from his series, The Celebrity Apprentice he does have an excellent ability to judge character. And, coming from the culture of Los Vegas, he should know about betting on a sure thing. One thing he does not do is ask a question about something he does not already know the answer.

I wonder how much The Donald knows now?

I don’t think he’s the real deal either; but, I sure love hearing him attack this issue that others should be attacking too.

Trump is a useful idiot...he knows not what he speaks on most issues; he is a two trick pony; let him play his trump card. It is about time someone is willing to harass the enemy. He will be destroyed in any debate on real issues; he cannot hide his liberalism.

On the B/C issue, Conservatives should give Trump some leeway to “do the job no other candidate is willing to do” (paraphrasing El Rushbo).

Yep. Trump is a liberal.

And I still want to see proof that Barack Hussein Obama, or whatever his name really is, is constitutionally-qualified to be occupying the White House.

Ditto. Trump for President? Fugeddaboutit.

Trump with the money and connections to get *somebody, somewhere* to cough up documentatation about Mystery Barry's past? Go for it and pass the popcorn!

I want to see his SAT and LSAT scores. I'll bet they weren't 50% of mine. We're roughly contemporaries, so the scores are comparable.

“This birther issue gets us nowhere...by the time it gets to the Supreme court etc etc”....

Mark is right about that IF the sole political meaning of the birther movement had to do with proving that Obama is ineligible to serve and, therefore, removing him from office.

As any political analyst worth their salt should know, however, the "birther" issue is a proxy for a deep and wide, in fact, pervasive skepticism about this President's background --- to wit, his non-American mentality --- in general.

If that generalized skepticism uses the birther label to express itself, so be it. But this means that analysts are severely missing the point if they think birtherism is solely, or even primarily, about showing a birth certificate and getting Obama out of office. Nothing could be further from reality.

For many, it's about expressing the fact that they truly wonder if this dude is, culturally, an American at all (regardless of where he was born or what his citizenship is).

For others it is also appalling to discover that there is no public process for determining, challenging and remedying eligibility issues. This must be fixed.

So it really depends on what the definition of "gets us anywhere" is.

In crass political terms, of course the birther issue helps Obama's opponents, whoever they are. It intrisically blares every scrap of distrust of Obama that is out there, regardless of whether that distrust is related to a birth certificate or not. It screams out that the nation has made a huge mistake. It shouts from the mountaintops, "Who the hell is this man and how did he get to the White House?" Not just birthers are asking that question, Mark.

No serious political analyst would suggest that the fact that such questions are still asked about a sitting president --- baseless or not --- is a neutral political phenomenon.

Hmmm, I seem to remember Reagan calling himself a rather large democrat at some point. Did he change?

“Trump is a liberal but useful on the birther issue.”

THen you don’t know Trump. He is far more conservative than any RNC candidate so far.

Levin is wrong not to give some credence to the issue surrounding Obama’s BC. If Obama is an illegal alien who broke the law to become potus, that is a big deal.

Having said that, we've been here before. Another effort by some folks to promote a high profile liberal Republican. We've seen it with Schwarzenegger, Giuliani, Romney and Scott Brown. Now conservatives have to suffer through the antics of this bozo. Donald Trump is an opportunist, pandering to conservatives and lying through his teeth in the process.

If Trump runs he will have standing before the court on this issue.

You would think that any candidate running against Obama will ask for a full accounting of this guy including pass school records, medical records etc.

I sure love hearing him attack this issue that others should be attacking too.

And I can assure you others WOULD be attacking Obama on the birther front if they thought they could get away with it. What politician wouldn't tap into a deep well of skepticism about his opponent?

But none of the GOP field are in The Donald's position. Ironically, Trump may have more of a genuine interest in the issue of any of them, even though I'm quite sure they'd be some of the first to jump on the bandwagon if they were sure they could do so and still protect their options.

Not that there's anything wrong with that.
