As a former New Yorker I'd like to remind everyone here of the first human word transmitted from the surface of the moon....."Houston...... Tranquility Base here..... the Eagle has landed."

Why should NY get our shuttle?

Inside the shuttle? No way is that ever going to happen. It would be ruined in months even if you had everyone don bunny suits. That’s why you can’t touch most of the planes at the USAF Museum; oils from hands would ruin them.

There should be no problem having a shuttle in NYC. It will be viewed by FAR more people there, from around the world, than would ever see it in Houston.

Houston was an LBJ boondoggle from the start of the program, designed to boost his stature, nothing else. Houston already has tons of space program hardware to display, the shuttle never was part of Houston, unless you count a few flying by on the back of a 747, or splattering over Texas & LA.

I am abhorred that so many FReepers are cheering on Pubbies for trying to rake in more bacon for their districts.

This was political payback from Obama for Texas and Ohio being solid red states. Do you think we should move the National Archives to NYC? After all, they will be viewed by FAR more people there, from around the world, than would ever see them in Washington.

"You don’t sell off history like that."

If we don't sell off a bit of our history then we won't be able to afford the future.

As I said we can put restrictions on the bidders such as no renting out the insides for birthday parties, weddings, or Democrat fundraising.

Apparently not.

Why don’t you just have a yard sale on the mall? Drag everything out of the Smithsonian and slap price tags on them. /sarc

I should have seen that coming. One reason is that the Smithsonian museums are free. Intrepid Sea/Air/Space is $35.

Wayne Hale used to be the Shuttle Program Manager. He basically says that they (tx politicians) didn’t work for it. I have mixed feelings on this. On the one hand more folks will probably visit in NY... On the other NY was a huge supporter of the space program.

Not trying to promote Wayne’s blog, but he does lay it out there for those wanting to read his take on the matter.

That's what I thought until Pete Olson's office sent me tons of stuff to refute that allegation.

Wyne doesn't know what he's talking in this case.

Funny you should mention yard sale. Last time I was at the Smithsonian I was unimpressed. The Smithsonian has become "The Air and Space Museum plus some other crap". When I was there they had an exhibit on lawn furniture through the years. Wow! It was so authentic that they put all the chairs and tables on astroturf!

I'm sure glad those bureaucrats are maintaining and displaying the most important aspects of our cultural heritage.

I’ll admit, Air & Space is far more impressive than the rest.

Is Pete trying to make up for his vote on recent budget related issues?

Oops, meant to say NY wasn’t (not was) a huge supporter of the space program.

“They already have Enterprise. It is going to NYC, and Discovery is going to Udvar-Hazy.”

Last time I was at Udvar Hazy, they had a shuttle.

That's right. Enterprise. But now Enterprise is going to NYC and Discovery is going to Udvar-Hazy.

His office response was "He did it for the troops".

I replied why not pass a real budget with the 100 billion in cuts like Republicans promised, make Barry veto it and own it.

Pete should have followed Joe Barton & Ted Poe.

"Political payback.....move National Archives...."

Look at ANY list of top tourism destinations...NYC is by far # 1. Houston?? Not so popular. As in not even being in Top 5, or Top 10, Or Top 25, or Top 50, Etc.

I suppose you think the Wright Flyer should be on display at Kitty Hawk?

How about showing off the Hope Diamond at a mine in S.A.?

RETURN THE ENOLA GAY TO HIROSHIMA ! ! !

When any great artifact goes on tour, how many times does Houston beat out NYC?

The ONLY reason to visit Houston is........damn, there must be one.....
