Goodbye To Glory Days And Shuttle-Ready Jobs
IBD Editorial ^ | April 14, 2011 | Staff

NASA: Instead of awarding our retired space fleet to museums, we should be awarding contracts to go to Mars and beyond. Once we triumphed over the vacuum of space. Now we face a vacuum of leadership.

A nation whose world leadership was unquestioned once held its breath as an American spacecraft placed American astronauts on the surface of the moon. It was a triumph of exceptionalism that was officially laid to rest this week as a nation held its breath to see which museums our space shuttle fleet would be awarded to.

In these difficult economic times and with a nation burdened by unsustainable debt, a robust space program may seem like a luxury we can't afford. But it was no less a luxury in 1961, when a young president pledged we would go to the moon not because it was easy but because it was hard.

America had a crisis of confidence. We had just suffered a genuine "Sputnik moment," not the one recently conjured up by President Obama for political purposes. The Bay of Pigs fiasco was still fresh in our memory. We needed a challenge that would raise our spirits above our everyday problems.

As even Obama noted in his State of the Union address, "Half a century ago, when the Soviets beat us into space with the launch of a satellite called Sputnik, we had no idea how we'd beat them to the moon. The science wasn't there yet. NASA didn't even exist."

That’s because the Kenyan usurper thinks NASA should do an outreach mission to the sheep-shaggers.

The only reason NASA was such a great deal was because they were in competition...with the Soviets. When we got to the moon, we won. After the Democrat Partys' hero-nation Soviet Union when teats-up in 1992, NASA no longer had any competition and became just another gubmint agency.

We need to privatize space travel.

Precisely.........and that makes me worse than sick. The American space program had a profound influence on this country and even on me, personally.

It is why I later went to the AF Academy. I even, years later, had the privilege of telling Adm. Alan Shepard to his face, one-on-one, just that; that he and his fellow Mercury astronauts (and Gemini, Apollo) motivated me to pursue a career in aviation.

Have to tell ya.....he was stunned by that. Shows just how humble he really was, despite the public image.

NASA lost it's way a long time ago, the space station is nothing but a cash cow, I have no ideal what it is suppose to achieve. The problem with space flight is speed and reentry. What work has NASA done in that area in the last twenty years. The answer is 0. Let the air force take it back over at least they might try something to see if it works.

NASA doesn’t have time or money to waste on space exploration.
It would detract from their presidential mission of reaching out to muslims.

NASA became a Affirmative Action “Jobs” bureaucracy ,nothing more, other than crashing shuttles once in a while.

The American people traded liberty for a TV clicker and HD. ALL of TV and Hollywood including Fox loves Oba and covers for him.

You all just need to sing this song everyday and get your mind’s right. Be like the rest of the stupid sheep who watch Obam TV.

Yup. Hope and Change. NASA was good when the Germans ran it. It is a joke now but many of the people in America are just idiots who drool in front of the Obam TV each night.

True. A country that doesn't even place graduating scientists and engineers hastens is exit from the global power elite.

The fact we now for the forseeable future must rely on Russians for allowing us to hitch rides to the international space station is a grim statement on how steeply in decline we truly are.

But, damn... back in the day, we were on top and unrivaled. It was a great era for America.

I was talking to a neighbor the other night. I dumped Oba TV almost 2 years ago now.

They overspent and bought all the toys, etc. Up to their eyeballs in debt, falling behind in the Oba Depression. They could crash any week. I avoid politics and just chit chat.

They said they had to run because Dancing with The Stars was coming on. The masses live in an Obama TV induced coma while everything is being taken from them and their children. They have given away their future for the idiot box. It is like mass ******g hypnosis - every effing day 24x7x365.

He could nuke Canada or murder 100 people on prime time TV and the news media/TV/Hollywood - would praise him.

It is like the Emperor Has No Clothes on steroids.

Michael Savage nailed it tonight when he talks about the govt/media/TV complex.

GE pays no taxes and gets huge “green” contracts because their TV networks (now owned 50/50 with Comcast) praise Obama at every turn and cover for him.

Mussolini’s Italy and Hitler’s Germany where business and govt are the same thing.

Maybe NASA can”t can’t get a rocket into space but at least they have a much fatter budget to do nothing meaningful with.
