1. People don’t vote for candidates that are considered “kooky”. Right or wrong, constitutional or not. For instance another “kooky” yet constitutional position is the repeal of all drug laws.
2. It’s perfectly likely that Trump will split the conservative faction, handing the nomination to say Romney.

The left spends a lot of time brow-beating the right into not discussing things they don’t want discussed...like the birther issue, or the C word (communist.) However, they are completely flummoxed and unable to respond when someone “goes there” anyway and they have no more arguments. Reagan had it and Trump has it.

As for Rove, he is bought and paid for by the Bush family. I am convinced that they are planning to toss Jeb Bushs hat in the ring late in the debate season once most of the candidates are beaten and bloody. Rove has even floated Jeb's name a couple times on Fox as a potential candidate. I think they had planned to run him in '08, but realized the Bush name was toxic at that point. But I am positive they will run him in either '12 or '16.
