It needs to razed down to nothing. Push all the debris into the sea. Forcible deport all the people around the world. It will be a gigantic waste of money to put one brick on another until the island is rejuvenated to be able to grow crops again, sustain top soil, able to grow trees, to be able to sustain a population
This is a perfect job for the UN to handle. First building build should be a brand new UN headquarters
The Un can do nothing—they are the problem not the solution. Time to end this farce—the thing is a relic of the Cold War and needs to be replaced with something else.
The entire western section of the rich lush island of Hispaniola looks like an abandoned lot in the South Bronx, or Detroit, with no porta-potties. The Eastern half: The Dominican Republic, is green, largely forested, agriculturally rich, has (thanks to the mean dictator Trujillo ...an evironmentally sensitive dictator ... because he personally made money off sustainable timber and agricultural exports, among other things) and years of intelligent investment in infrastructure.
The Dominican Republic? OK, It ain't Ohio, but it's livable, fairly neat as far as Third World places go, and always seemed run by a somewhat intelligent, if corrupt, life form. Haiti? demolition, 2000 D-9s, a landscape architect, and the population transported to Liberia would really help. Use the rubble to create breakwaters. They blew it. The Players on Team Haiti need to be broken up, traded into any other league that would have them, and start over with civilization coaching.
The bad news: The Dominican Republic suffers from creeping Haitianism, largely due to illegal immigration. Crossing the border does not change people's habits. IMHO, lots of places in the DR that were pretty kewl 10 years ago are looking Haiti-fied lately. 2/3 of the DR's real people are illegal immigrants in the US. They ought to think about going home before the bloody Haitians eat their lunch and make the whole island a voo-doo nightmare..
