Allegedly, the burglars were after the petitions gathered to recall Dave Hansen, who was one of the Wisconsin Democratic senators who fled the state rather than participate in the democratic process. Which - if this was in fact done by Democratic party operatives or sympathizers - would merely demonstrate that Hansen is in fact fairly representative of his party, at that.
The good news is that the recall folks say that they still have enough signatures, so it should have no insurmountable effect on the recall process, but you can expect that local Democrats will try to wring as much advantage out of any disruption as possible. Whether or not the Democrats were actually involved - and if this story checks out, the Wisconsin Democratic party leadership will heartily regret it if any member traceable back to their party was actually involved; this is felony territory. Serious felony territory.

The Watergate scandal was making headlines at this time, and it was called the Lowell Watergate."
The police were probably the look-outs for the robbers.

I have a friend who spent much of her childhood in South Africa. She said when apartheid ended, many blacks had been promised homes and other property. When that didn’t happen, violence erupted against whites. She said the unrest lasted for years.
A parallel for America?
If the break-in occurred in Madison, where the police chief is a Dem supporter, don't expect a high probability of police catching them (or even looking for them). Don't even be surprised if police were INVOLVED in the break in.
By just advertising the facts about why they have to re-canvas and re-petition they will get many people to sign who would be as or more offended by the thug tactics than they were about the original fleeing to Illinois.

Wisconsin’s Election Snafu Is a National Wake-Up Call
The need for greater transparency grows as we head toward 2012.

It’s been over a decade since the Bush-Gore recount in Florida was supposed to spur a wholesale modernization of our election systems. But a stunning mistake made by a Wisconsin county clerk in a nationally watched state Supreme Court race reminded us of how far we have to go.
Wisconsin voters went to the polls on April 5 in an election that could have flipped the state Supreme Court’s majority from conservative to liberal. On the morning of April 6, liberal challenger JoAnne Kloppenburg declared victory by a margin of some 200 votes. But the next day Waukesha County Clerk Kathy Nickolaus announced that she had excluded some 14,000 votes from the city of Brookfield when she gave her final tally to the Associated Press on election night. The revised tally put conservative incumbent David Prosser more than 7,000 votes ahead of Ms. Kloppenburg, and he has since been verified the clear winner.
Ms. Nickolaus’s error could have been easily avoided through transparency. She had ended the prior clerk’s practice of reporting election results for individual cities because it was “not her responsibility” and she didn’t “have the staff to enter all the data”—an absurd statement given that many smaller counties post such data on their websites. Many states, such as Kentucky, offer user-friendly websites to track returns statewide.
Not so in Wisconsin—and if we don’t view this month’s mess as a wake-up call, we’ll have only ourselves to blame if next year’s presidential election turns into a rerun of Florida 2000. Americans know it could happen: The Brookings Institution reports that in a 2004 poll of 37 nations, Americans were more likely than citizens of any country save Russia to say that their elections are “very dishonest.”

Doesn’t that hole in the window look like it would be quite difficult for someone to squeeze into? First, it’s small. Second, the glass is still jagged on top, bottom and sides...seems to me anyone entering that hole would have been cut to shreds or taken out those shards of glass.
