All 5,466 of Detroit Public School Teachers to Receive Layoff Notices (Democrat Fires 'em!)

This is what the recession looks like in a country that’s decided to disinvest in public education. Reuters reports that Robert Bobb, the emergency financial manager appointed to address the Detroit’s bleeding public school system, has decided to send notices to all 5,466 unionized public school teachers. And 250 administrators will get layoff notices as well.

Robert Bopp was appointed by DEMOCRAT governor Jennifer "You Haven't Seen Anything Yet" Granholm.

Robert Bopp is himself a Democrat.

And even Robert Bopp knows the teachers union is draining what LITTLE wealth is left in Detroit.

I've just gotta smile.

Robert Bobb and Dave Bing are true democrats but they appear to be fairly pragmatic despite a few typical democrat departures from reality. Detroit could do a whole lot worse.

One of Bobbs first acts was to stop mailing paychecks to post office boxes. He found something like 200 non existent employees.

Oh bulls**t.

We spend billions in this country on education but unfortunately a significant portion of that money is wasted on chieftains and pensions.

According to the New York Times, there are as many students enrolled in charter schools as there are in traditional public schools, and there’s even talk of converting the entire district to charter school control.

Oh this should be good... we get to sit back and watch the Unions and the Democrat party consume each other. I’m reminded of “Escape from LA”, where the city got so bad they just walled off that part of the country and let the miscreants fight each other. Too bad we don’t have a wall around Detroit.

Republican governor, republican secretary or state, republican attorney general, republican house, republican senate. We picked up two US house seats. We also reelected one conservative supreme court judge and seated another.

I said before the election that the conservative wave would be bigger in Michigan than anywhere else but nobody believed me.

Last month we released nearly 20,000 home child care workers from forced unionization and deprived the unions of some $20 million annually.

One of the first things Dave Bing did as Mayor was to fire some 50 bus drivers who declared an informal strike.

He declared that bus service was unaffected and that their services would no longer be needed.

"It’s unlikely that every layoff notice will result in actual layoffs, but under the district’s union contract they must notify teachers who face potential job losses. The final numbers of actual layoffs will go into effect in late July."

These layoffs are becoming common toward the end of school year. Some get their notices to return at the end of the year, others over the summer.

Always loved Dave Bing when he was a player.

Back in the days when some NBA players actually had more morals than money.

As an all star he only made some $20,000 a year back then. He went to the bank for a home loan and they didn't give it to him. Instead of playing the victim, he got a job with the bank in the off season and earned the money to buy a home. He was also given a minority business award by Ronald Reagan.

Don't know about Michigan, but here layoff notices for union teachers are routine and required by contract.

They are done to manage the yearly reorganization of classes, because without timely notices, ya have to keep and fully pay any teachers that ya don't needed for benign reasons like declining enrollment.

May not be what it seems...Teachers get a year's wages for working 9 months...In the past, they were all layed off at the end of the school year and all drew unemployment benefits for the next 3 months til being called back to work...

Charter Schools are the next step in the federal plan to REFORM 'their' system. Look into the Charters and you may find as in Philadelphia PA, an Islamist South Side being created via a Universal Cos/ Kenny Gamble aka Luqman Abdul Haqq charter. See WSJ 4/11/11 article 'Comeback School Misses Mark'

The Gulen Movement/Fethullah Gulen Community (FGC) is another that is creating Charters with Islamic focus all across the U S. The are based in Saylorsburg PA .

Be careful what you wish for. Charters are not the answer. They are being used to advance the Progressive Agenda.

Considering that you can buy houses in Detroit for $5000, at current valuation, how many houses does it take to get enough property taxes to pay the salary of even one teacher? If you throw in a homestead deduction from the valuation, I’d bet the taxing district would have to pay homeowners.

Geeze, assumming they taxed a home at 100% of valuation, and disallowed homestead exemptions, it would still take a dozen or more.

You are giving libs the pass on rational thought.

The way they would figure is thus: One house bought for 5,000, 5, or 50,000, does not matter. We need 100 k for teachers, divided by the number of homes owned in the area. Let's see, one owner, so, you owe 100 k in taxes. Simple, straightforward lib math.

It would be nice if, as a condition of re-employment, a teacher had to get an above-50th-percentile score on an SAT-II subject-matter test on each subject they would be teaching. But the EEOC would bar that.

If Islamic charters are being created then the problem is with immigration and not with charters. Start there with immigration.

Anyway...If you have followed my posts regarding K-12 education you will see that in nearly every post I call for the complete separation of school and state. Parents and charity should be responsible for education. Government on every level ( federal, state, and local) must divest itself of anything to do with education.

We now have a government cartel monopoly on K-12 education. This cartel is giving its services away for tuition-free! Few businesses can compete against that. How long do you think your local Safeway, Smiths, or Acme would stay open if government ran grocery stores that gave food away for free? In many counties, such as mine, there are no private schools because they can not compete against the government cartel.

So....I support vouchers, charters, and tax credits ONLY if they are used to build the private infra-structure needed to completely abolish all government involvement in education.

The danger that I see with charters, vouchers, and tax credits is that we will have the tuition inflation that we see on the college and university level. Also, as you rightly point out, the voucher, tax credit, and charters could easily be controlled by powerful Marxist and government interests.

A few years ago, millions of children in the United States vanished overnight. It wasn’t even a blip on the news. Nobody launched an investigation. What happened was, the IRS required filers to provide their dependant’s Social Security numbers. I think the number was 30,000,000.

I agree.

I've seen it happen when a school board is not sure if a budget will be voted in and they have to send out layoff notices rather than committing early to the next year's contracts.

Once the budget is voted in the contracts are mailed out.

Not really unusual, IMHO.

They should do that with the Detroit public school employees. See how many "employees" are no-show scams. Send people to actually do surprise visits to schools and verify that each "teacher" actually is really there in front of a classroom.

Truth is Detroit’s schools are flat-busted broke, and property is so worthless within city limits it would not run the system for two months if taxed at 90%.

My personal favorite to run against Stabenow is Rob Steele. He was the tea partier who got a late start in a race against Dingell. Steele lost the race but gave the old fart and his minions a real workout. He was the first to announce a run against Stabenow this time.

Our former SOS Terri Land is also planning to run but I have no opinion of her. We also keep hearing rumors that former Governor John Engler will or won’t run.
