HAVANA — Fidel Castro confirmed he had resigned from the top leadership of the Cuba Communist Party in an article published on Tuesday, after the party approved a raft of economic reforms.

He’s abdicating to take the VP spot on the new Obama ticket.

Sorry, Joe.

I guess he stepped down from one leadership role but did not completely give up power.

Perhaps, because of our President, Cuba has decided to become a representative republic and adopt Capitalism so that they can continue to be our adversary.

There will be much weeping and gnashing of teeth among our liberal friends. One of their oldest and most respected heros is heading for the dustbin of history. Alas, who can a commie look up to these days?

One a more important note, what does this news mean for all those great 1950s American land yachts that perambulate through the streets of Havana?

Fidel is staring at the grave and wants to be an iconic communist figure for history. After the changes his brother announced the other day, Fidel needed to step down to protect his “legacy”.

The Cuban regime is preparing for the post-Castro era. The purpose of Fidel Castro “stepping down” is to assure that his death will not be seen as having immediate practical consequence because all power and authority will have already passed from him.

It will really be interesting to see if they really follow through on the idea of only allowing the top elected officials to have 2 five year terms, max.

I checked on babalublog.com. The news hasn’t hit there just yet but scrolling down, I read an entry about the recent party congress where some piddling-but-unprecedented reforms were announced.

The cuban communist party congress had been postponed for two years because the commandantes were certain that Obama, Pelosi and Reid were going to lift the trade/financing/tourism sanctions and bail them out. The election of 2010 put paid to that notion and they had no choice to go ahead and enact reforms.

They have a collapsing economy and no younger generation of true believers to follow in their footsteps. So Fidel is making his retirement official. Raul stays in charge but he must be worried sick about being retired Saddam/Ceausescu fashion. The laying off of a million government workers with no economy to absorb them seems obviously suicidal.
